Ceramic coating is a DIY thing?!?!
Yeah, there are like hobbiest grade ones from simple ones you spray on while drying etc. all the way up to multiple application kits. I bought the gyeon mohs from which is a more simple one coat and also the rim version which I will put on my summer wheels. I bought carpro cquartz lite for general use as it is cheap for a big bottle and used it on my winter wheels and now all the brake dust just quickly sprays off at topgear instead of having to use and wait for the wheel cleaner. Paint needs a polish before I can apply the body ceramic is my issue, never got to it this year.

Honestly we've had so many ups and downs, I just soap then wax/rinse. It's not elegant but it is cheaper.

Not really a winter thing, unless you can go without your car for a couple days.

Rainier @ Nano Defense has done a number of Beyonder's cars including my own, @Mitsu3000gt , and @killramos .

Going off memory, you're looking at around a thousand bucks, give or take.

There is a curing period after the coating is applied. It's a good couple days.

It all depends on what level paint correction your car requires. Stage 1 or 2. Paint correction has to be done on your paint before ceramic coating is put on

For my car, it was brand new from the dealer, it still needed light polishing from the dealerships new car detailing. Package was $950. That included the light polishing, vehicle detailing/clay bar, decontamination, and full ceramic on car + wheels and ceramic on glass surfaces + free maintenance wash/ceramic coating top up in the spring. My coating is supposed to last 4-5 years. Whether this affects the price or not, I'm not sure, maybe 1 year coatings are cheaper?

So I'd say pricing ranges anywhere from $800-1500. Polishing will be extra

The product cost is relatively insignificant, what you're paying for is the labor to prep the paint - without that, your coating will not have nearly the performance it's supposed to. At minimum you will need a basic polish and surface decontamination, even if the car is new. Older vehicles might need a stage 2 polish and that costs more because it takes longer.

There are good products that last ~4 years (if maintained) that are around $600 or so for everything. My research suggests the ultra expensive coatings ($1000++) that claim to last 10 years or some ridiculous amount of time don't last any longer than the cheaper products that claim to last 2-4 years. So if you need to re-do the coating every ~4 years, you might as well be paying $600 instead of $1500.

If you intend to ceramic coat your car, you may find value in paying extra and having a professional take care of it vs a DIY route. The application of the coating isn't complex but it can be technical and I've read some product comments on people who do it incorrectly.

That, and the paint correction that has to come beforehand is another consideration if you've not done it before and/or don't have the means to.

I haven't found it that hard and I've done a few different types going back to the original professional only Opti-Coat. Most of the newer products such as Gyeon MOHS are very easy to apply and wipe down. The most difficult part of the process is simply the time and patience it takes to do the stages from decontaminating, polishing, IPA wipedown, etc followed by applications of the coating.

Ah, that's good to know. I don't think I could bring myself to DIY it on my car but I'm willing to give it a shot with my new rims.

Will stop by Carzilla and chat with them about picking up some Gyeon MOHS.

Does "polish" not mean apply wax or something similar in this context? Seems like the nano coating isn't going to stick to a waxed surface anywhere near as well as paint.
Sorry if that's a stupid question!

Polish as in a cut-polish, to get rid of the very top layer of your clear coat and along with it all surface contamination, minor swirls, etc.

Speaking of ceramic coat, I need to ceramic coat my windshield again since I got it replaced. Going to try out some Aquapel I bought on eBay for time being. Probably fake Aquapel and just some Rain-X solution since its eBay China.

A more technical perspective on what is happening to your paint and clear coat during paint correction.

If you've never installed a coating before and it's your first time, expect to spend 20-30 hours to do it properly.

A new car with "decent" paint should take an experienced professional ~10 hours to complete.

There's a new trend of coating specialists who do this work in a lot less time. They are not faster, they are just skipping steps.

    Mega oof.

Speaking of car washes, forecast doesn't show any snow coming up and the roads are fairly dry other than minimal melting.

Gonna run the car through a touchless today.

Im not sure what forecast you are looking at but the daytime high temps will be 0 and higher the next week or so. This means fucking mud and dirt fest if you drive any of the major routes.

I don't take any big routes and most of the routes I take have been pretty clear of snow so the plus weather later this week won't impact it much more until next snowfall.

For you guys washing your cars when it's cold, if you don't have heated parking, make sure you wipe down your door sills so your weather stripping doesn't freeze and rip when you open your door the next day.
