There is no perfect dual purpose car that’s good for towing and sporty unless you are towing sub 1000lbs in my opinion. This is why I just got a truck and a car.

This is like his 6th thread on the topic. Answer is always the same. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
OP Just do it and make sure you leave the camera on for our lulz, and let us know which highways you are on so we can avoid.

No, I won't be a Mar.
I just fucking hate trucks/SUVs, I think unless you're an off roader, or you work in construction, or you have 2+ kids and need a giant camper, or just a large person in general, it's stupid. I am none of those and therefore do not wish to voluntarily own and drive a boring ass vehicle.
I hear you on the different specs between continents, thanks especially to you Darell N...
I guess this means I'll probably have to sell my X1 after the winter too
New plan, get a year round sports car, and spend a only few thousand on a hauler.

Word, my trailer is 4800#'s dry and I have a heavy half-ton truck. I couldn't imagine towing it even with a base model. The geometry of heavy vehicles actually doesn't make it feel like there are thousands of pounds behind you going up that hill. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
My truck will soon live by my trailer on the farm and just have a daily.

Same, I have a huge dislike for trucks/SUVs unless they are being purposefully being used. We have an old 2001 V10 f350 (gas) that is parked most of the time but is very useful when it comes time for summer trips and hauling. No need to have the latest vehicles when old/maintained trucks work better than many new ones. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Depends on your level of sporty you want though? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I'm looking at a 2013ish ML63 and it can tow 7000lbs... are you seriously going to tell me I'm going to have issues towing my 3000lb trailer? For me, even though it doesn't come in a manual i think I'm gonna have lots or year round fun in a Ml63 no? I just can't quite afford it right now lol

The only thing that worries me is breaking down in the middle of nowhere, my GLK was great and did the job, but it had 240,000km already and we're planning to camp in BC next year. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Oh, I feel your pain, trust me. I HATE daily driving a truck and did all the research before buying one, trying to find a car that's adequately tow capable, but they just aren't out there. I had a 2002 Audi Allroad with air suspension that was rated for 3500# in North America, but 5000# in Europe. I towed 3500# (loaded trailer) with it 1/2 dozen times and it could do it fine, but only in perfect conditions. Any crosswind, and I was getting fishtailed around the highway, emergency stopping? Nyope. It just wasn't safe. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
AMA for coverage here and with older vehicles is also preventative maintenance as well in many cases. I replaced my alternator on my 290,000 km civic, because winter. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Dont they have different speed limits for campers in Europe too?
Oh I'm not worried about coverage, I'm worried about being broke down in n the middle of nowhere with no cell service. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
@370Z , do you already have the trailer, or are you looking at a model in particular? If you can post a link to the trailer specs, I can assist in getting you realistic tongue weights, which are usually NOT included in the specs.

I like neat cars.
I tow my dump trailer/skid steer with a Focus RS and it seems fine.

You're fixated on the towing capacity when you need to be looking at more than just that. Payload on the ML is what, 1100lbs? Trailer is 3000lbs dry? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Take the loaded weight of the trailer and use 10-12% of that as tongue weight, remove that from the payload number. Then total up the weight of all the people and other stuff inside or on the car, subtract that. If you're getting anywhere close to 0 or going negative, you don't have enough vehicle. You'll blow your payload number before you hit towing capacity.

Simple math and yet people don't get it, thanks for your very simple but detailed explanation. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

You have to do this math first before even looking at the trailer weight and if it is in your towing numbers. My truck has a 1700lbs payload. I know with me and the family in the truck and supplies, I try to keep any tongue weight <700lbs. That way I can keep the truck stable and not worry about overloading the suspension, especially in the rear. a WD hitch helps a lot with this.
But yeah, this topic has been flogged to death and back again many times over. Long story short, don't even try. But if you decide to, as others have said, record it for the lulz.

Cool, cool thanks.... hopefully I remember this thread come summer time lol
My wives SUV is 'capable' of towing my trailer. I've even seen people do it. I hooked it up for fun this summer and drug it around the yard. Literally smashing off the bumpstops, bottoming out, I think I took it about 20 feet before I unhooked it and got our truck to go and put it back.
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
