My apologies. I did not mean to write working hours correlates to stress. I just wanted to view an extra parameter for reference.

I am working longer hours now (and making more money) but less stress. My old job was half as many hours but the stress was overwhelming because of unrealistic targets that cannot be met regardless of effort/dedication. Boss wanted the impossible (ie. double the portfolio in null time) and put the responsibility under my tree. Waking up at night with new ideas and writing it down before going back to bed was a nightmare.

She was in University when I met her, I already owned two homes. Shes making her fortune, I’m making mine, her position allows my new position to be stress free.

    Life choices.
    That's basically what I said.

I also find if funny how a lot of people confuse financial success with their own skills or work ethic, especially in O&G. I think you and I were both mid level cogs in oil and gas companies during times of prosperity. Let's not pretend we were cutting edge innovators or captains of industry.

Between 2004 and 2009 I saw a lot of smart, hard working people make nice money off of stock options, but there we an equal number of hard working people who didn't make any real coin and a bunch of dumb people who fell into cash.

I guess the question is can a woman be at a level where they can have a “pet” for a partner like men (say, a trophy wife)... or is there still a need to be cared for (having the partner being equal or above their level) ...that’s my question
Yes. I know two of them, both women are doctors. Both husbands are (very handsome and personable) dumb idiots.

Previous role was 3-4. Managed a team of ~75; joined as a part of a succession plan for the CFO's role. 6 months in forced retirement and I absorbed his position into mine. No compensation adjustment and no rehiring for my existing role.

Current position is a 1-2. Have ~15 people in the team and my days are no longer spent managing people.

Why does everyone have such an aversion to stress?

There are worse things in the world to be than stressed:

    - bored
    - a state of feeling insignificant
    - disrespected

    I'm sure others
    This.

There is such a thing as a healthy level of stress. It keeps you on your toes, keeps you performing. Performance has a positive effect on your psyche. You feel self worth.

Having zero stress at your job would be absolutely mind rotting. Just look at the sloths who work in government.

How so? This sounds interesting. Do you mean that it puts people into a state where their decision making ability is so compromised that their choices are suddenly retarded?

No, stress physically shrinks the brain and destroys brain cells. High cortisol levels inhibit the brains ability to function properly and often cause irreversible damage.

There is no healthy level of stress in my opinion. Functioning in complex situations and environments with the absent of stress is what everyone should seek obtain.

Agree with stress being much more about you internally. The worst long term stress in my life has always been more about my own mindset.

Things which "should be" stressful for me at work have about a 50/50 chance of actually bothering me. I can sometimes be pretty zen about it.
This, people tend to treat stress, as if it is some objective outside force that can be equally determined across varying subjects (people), regardless of circumstances. When in reality, the vast majority of stress is entirely person-dependant, based on their own thinking and worldview.

Stress can be properly managed, to the point where something that is supposed to stress you (or people in general), is rather insignificant. And situations that have characteristically been known to cause you immense stress in the past, can be reduced significantly.

I think you're over-stated the current science somewhat. There are also other things that would be considered beneficial that raise cortisol levels - high intensity exercise for instance.

But in general the second part is true. Although I can think of many complex situations that are not likely to induce stress, and some simple ones that are.

Exercise dumps cortisol, not increases it's levels.

Those complex and simple situations and the ability to manage them effectively are where flow psychology comes into play in my opinion.

"Collectively, the cortisol findings support the view that moderate to high intensity exercise provokes increases in circulating cortisol levels. These increases seem due to a combination of hemoconcentration and HPA axis stimulus (ACTH). In contrast, low intensity exercise (40%) does not result in significant increases in cortisol levels, but, once corrections for plasma volume reduction occurred and circadian factors were examined, low intensity exercise actually resulted in a reduction in circulating cortisol levels."

    That’s interesting to think;

“The mental benefits of aerobic exercise have a neurochemical basis. Exercise reduces levels of the body's stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body's natural painkillers and mood elevators. Endorphins are responsible for the "runner's high" and for the feelings of relaxation and optimism that accompany many hard workouts — or, at least, the hot shower after your exercise is over.”

I’m no expert but perhaps HITT is bad for your brain
