I dont have much to add, but I fly Canadian North all the time and while the flight experience is always really good, the delays out of that place are a fucking nightmare.

So many flights I've taken are a minimum of an hour late flying back to calgary with a few being 4 hours late. There is always a maintenance issue.

The last flight I took home this past december was a milk run to Edmonton and then calgary. The fucking windshield was blown out, they apparently taped it(dont quote me as it was dark and couldnt see it) and they could only fly to calgary because that was the only way it was safe to fly...

There are just always issues with them. Garbage old planes or what?
Canadian north does have older equipment, yes, but northern flying is northern flying. Weather plays a HUGE role in delays. Because they’re a small airline, if your inbound aircraft is delayed from any of its 5 previous legs, they can’t just pull together a spare airplane and crew to mitigate the delay like a large airline can.

As for the windshield, usually if it’s just the outer pane that’s cracked, it’s not part of the pressure vessel and you’re allowed to operate it ONE leg with the broken pane. One leg only. Guessing they only had a replacement windshield (which are like $30,000 btw) in Calgary and not Edmonton.

Garbage planes, and their maintenance is garbage as well.

Any proof to back that up? They’ve never crashed a plane.

I wonder if the First Air merger will help with that at all.

I also figure ATRs will be taking over from the classic Dashes.

Personal experience. I was in the same hanger as them for a decade. They weren't terrible for a long time, but then a mass exodus of their good maintenance guys happened in the past 2 years. I wouldn't trust any of them to change the oil in my car.

Interesting. Maybe the First Air merger will help that as well haha

Sounds like corp restructuring 101 - get rid of the most expensive workers to bring costs down (or cut wages to incentivize them to leave).

    What could possibly go wrong?

I keep seeing "they made a billion dollars" but when I look at their annual statements and compare to other similar sized companies in different industries they seem to be bringing in a similar percentage as others. Are we just expecting them to cut down to a non-profit socialist system or something?

It's a matter of entitlement... As eluded to earlier, everyone expects to be able to fly 6,000km across the country for $60 and do it 3 or 4 times a year... If they can't, those greedy corporations and employees are making too much $$$$.

Just randomly watched a YT vid last night about a guy who went into commercial flying from airforce in the States. He flashed a few graphs up showing the pay at about $120,000 for FO on 737 and close to $300,000 for a senior captain on a widebody. So it seems a lot better down there pay wise.

It's almost like we have a tool/mechanism that we can use to discover prices...I wonder what we would call that?

Yup, conservatives love capitalism until it slightly inconveniences them, and then it's just greed

They do, because they realized the situation much quicker than Canada with all of our two airlines. As an aircraft tech. I could literally earn double my wages if I went to the USA. If it were just my wife and I, we would have done it, but I don't want to raise my kid in the US.

Thank you for saying this. People seem to forget that flying is a privilege and not a right. If it costs too much for your liking, take the greyhound.

This whole idea that it's normal to take multiple thousand KM trips many times a year is crazy.

Except flying is way cheaper than that... Was like 800$ last time I checked an Ontario price. Probably why it no longer exists

Pilots in the States make way more than we do up here.

Big Red 777 captains make good money, but they’re still among the lowest paid 777 pilots in the world.
