Can someone explain to me why cedar or wood is not used anymore? Our 40 year old house has seen countless hail storms and no issues. Is the cost of composite siding equal/less to wood now?

Composite is cheaper, more stable and the finish lasts more then 1-2 years.
My parents have aluminum siding and they’re tough af
Composite, is that like "hardy board" or something different? It's slightly less flammable too, right?

I assumed he was referring to cement board siding (the major manufacturer being James Hardie). And yes its non-combustible.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If it is non-combustible, how would I be able to get the rest of my fellow taxpayers to pay for damages?

I like neat cars.
Why are you using freedom units instead of metric like the French tells us to do.

Brick is where it's at, fire up the kiln. Fire proof, hail proof, and always in style. The Commodores knew what was up.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I've always wondered why houses in Calgary have almost never been made with brick. Lots of facades, but no real brick buildings. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Cheap and available lumber and sandstone here. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Typically substantial brick development comes from mandated building codes where fires have historically been a problem. After the “great fire” in 1886 Calgary went mostly for readily available sandstone construction for fire mitigation.

Like most things, cost is the primary driver. Builders churning out cookie-cutter homes to flip for maximum profit are probably going to use whatever the cheapest materials are they can get away with that will last the duration of the home warranty. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Builders or developers construct what people what and what people are willing to pay for. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
People want granite countertops and hardwood floors. They dont care about brick exteriors, hail resistant shingles or triple glazed windows... or they dont care enough to pay more for those things.
I wonder if they'd start to care if home insurance took it into consideration (or do they now?)

Don't quote me, I think brick facade is also PITA when windows need to be replaced. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
As I have seen many in my hood never put the brick facade back on and switch to simple stucco after windows replacement.
It's not just the builders; the amount of things buyers will sacrifice so they can afford the house that will impress the guests borders on abysmal. Cheaping out on everything and then blaming the builder in 10 years when your mud roof collapses is not as uncommon as it should be.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Don't offer cheap shit.
but its also the idiots trying to buy things they can't afford. But if the cheap shit isn't an option they will look elsewhere.
