In this article it specifically says that insurance refused to pay for the hail damage. Why would this be the case? I can understand people seeking assistance if they didn’t have insurance or if it was some clause like overland flooding that wasn’t covered on their policy. But hail = act of god isn’t it? Or is house insurance not mandatory in Calgary?

It sounds like it's not that they're necessarily declining them outright, they're just not covering the entire cost. I'm curious why as well, but I wonder... When I recently got a quote on home insurance, having an older roof, I was told that if it was damaged, insurance would only cover 50% of the cost, purely based on the age. If I had it replaced (by me, out of pocket), then they would cover 100% of the replacement cost.

I can't speak to siding but i know roofing warranties are often pro-rated.

Almost all roofing coverage is prorated now. It's not the lottery win it used to be.

My guess is siding is the same too. So $1000 deductible plus paying the 20-40% of the siding bill, it comes in pretty high.
But some guy on the news said his roof repair bill is $30k.
That's the same as a 5000 sqft house so I'm thinking he got the "insurance adjusted quote" from the contractor.

I see that damage and just think how happy I am to have aluminium siding from the 60s on my place.
That stuff could block a bullet. Especially with the 50's stucco underneath.

Our 1955 bungalow used to have ancient aluminum clad wood byproduct siding and a hail storm a few years ago took care of that. Am now all Hardie board now and would not consider plastic or metal siding again.

Our 1/2" thick Cedar siding on our 40 y/o house should be able to take most golf balls - windows not so much!

I think damages could be up to $30-$40k if siding and roof need to be replaced. And if both are pro-rated and given a lot of communities hit are over 25 years old with original material, the may end with nothing.

IMO insurance should put house with asphalt shingle and siding to a higher risk category and charge premium accordingly,

Pretty sure they already do. On the farm, we ditched cedar and asphalt shingles on the main house, and put on a steel roof, and when we notified the insurance company, we got a discount.

Pea sized hail in Auburn Bay.
The longer I live in Calgary, the more tired I grow of the weather patterns here....

There's lots that is prorated but it still depends on the policy. You can still have full-replacement roof/siding coverage (like we do) with a higher deductible (~$2000).

If the gov't implements some kind of relief program, I'd like to see it include some kind for incentives for hail-resistant siding/roofs - the insurance companies aren't providing any discounts for upgrades and instead are just refusing coverage or dropping insurees.

What is up with environment Canada lately? Is their WFH strategy not going well or what. Their forecasting was almost always bang on and since this storm season started they're batting like 5/100 on 'rain' days. Even laughing at 100% rain in the app and it being sunny outside.

Apparently they used data from airplanes to help forecasts and since there’s less flights there’s less data

I understand their forecast centre (at least as far as Calgary goes) is based out of Winnipeg. Not sure if that also has something to do with it as well.

Looking out the window here, I can tell what kind of weather we are going ot have the next few hours, where as EC seems to not always have a clue.

Their forecasts and CURRENT weather updates are utter shit.

80% rain days are sunny all day with no clouds and 20% rain days are multiple mm's of rain all afternoon. Like posted above looking out the window is much more accurate then any app updates.

Came here to say this too, we're trying to finish re-staining the deck and we can't plan shit because we need a full day of no rain. Impossible.
