Camped at the Juan De Fuca Park - China Beach on the west side of Vancouver Island for September long weekend. Weather was a mid 20s, suny, though one morning it was foggy at the beach.

Campsite itself was really nice. Big tall trees that shaded the site very well during the day, though at night you couldn't really see a lot of stars because of the trees, and it really limited my solar panel's ability to charge the trailer. Also, no cell phone reception at the campsite on any carrier (a bonus!). No hookups at all and no shower if that matters. Firewood is delivered to your campsite, $8/bundle.

The walk down to the beach is about 1.2km, and almost entirely down hill on the way there (my kids counted 252 stairs we had to go down) through the forest. If you're horribly out of shape, bring lots of water and take breaks when you're coming back up. There is an outhouse down at the beach, but you gotta go out about 50 stairs. The beach was lovely during low tide. Lots of sand for the kids to play in, and rocks. Had a nice beach fire with the drift wood and roasted hot dogs ! The water was cold of course because it's basically the strait of juan de fuca/salish sea.

I took lots of pics at the beach and on the way down to it, a few are below. Unfortunately I forgot to take a pic of my campsite.

Wife, friend, and our kids. We got there when the tide was still going out, so as the day went on the beach size more than doubled.

The fog made the walk through the forest really surreal

Fog at the last set of steps before we got to the beach.

tl;dr: Amazing campsite with nice beach. Walk to beach is not anyone horribly out of shape. I'm definitely going back.

Love that part of the world. Hiked most of the Juan de Fuca trail when I was a young man. Haven't been back for a few years.

Camped at Sibbald Lake. Was very nice, except that the site I chose was far too difficult for my inept backing in skills. Luckily they have a site on hold for dummies like myself to use.

Noticed that no back in sites were populated by trailers in my loop.

Also have confirmed that I cannot last longer than 36 hours with my battery.

Was out at sibbald this weekend, asshole neighbour ran a generator all night for “medical requirements”

I need a new camping setup, the wife was ready to throw in the towel as she is over tent life with 3 dogs. Reasonable budget for a tow rig and trailer under 20 feet?

If you go new, I'd say 50k rig, 30k trailer, but if you go a few years old, probably 35-40k for a half-ton (harder to pull off given all the trucks heading south) and 20k for the trailer. Search for R-Pod, Micro Minnies, apex nano, etc. Recommend just going to a few dealers and trying to walk through as many trailers as you can to get a sense of the features and floorplans you prefer, and then having a few kijiji alerts for the models/keywords you're seeking. Don't recommend buying from a dealer personally, but maybe others will have a different opinion.

Definitely there were days this year I wished I had a more competent offroad vehicle. luxo-barge lariat does well enough on fire road MTB shuttles but i feel like my old Tacoma would trounce it once things get even sorta rough.

What I don't understand is the trendy-overlander rooftop tent craze. If I was going RTT it would ONLY be on a tow-behind "expedition" trailer; having to set up and break down tent daily when you venture from home base would be a huge PITA

If you have cash to burn, I camped next door to a Cricket this year and it looked friggin' badass. If all you're doing is hitting provincial campsites though it's pricey for what you're getting.

Even slightly used; this year I'm sure was particularly tricky, but the dealer would hardly budge on a ~2016 model, and when I bought an identical but slightly older (~2011) version of the same unit, it was half price. Saved me well into the five figures.

Nothing the dealer offered in terms of PDI/delivery/warranty/etc seemed like a value add. I'd wager the older private party unit I purchased was actually in better repair. The type of person who trades a four year old trailer probably aint takin' great care of it.

Bingo. I still regret selling my 8 foot tent trailer. Thing towed like it didnt exist behind the taco, had a pile of room, could off road easy..

The only thing I know about buying trailers is you should make sure you mortgage it for at least 20 years.

Stayed at Sundance lodges over the weekend. Was a really nice setup, lots of space between the cabins, the heater in the cabin worked well enough that wasn't chilly at all at night and had to turn it to low even with single digits outside. A bit on the pricey side but was a nice break from our usual camping setup. Each of the sides had a fair bit of space between them so didn't feel crowded like some campgrounds.

Pretty much, but still nice to not be in a hotel. Would rather wake up in the trees here than in a best western. They have teepee and tent site options too, this was just their nicer trapper tent setup.

Likely avoiding tent trailers as the wife wants to extend the season if we are dropping money. I told her $30k would be a pretty standard entry area for a *good* truck we wouldn’t have t replace in 5 years and decent trailer, she looked at me like I had 3 eyes. Glad to see I wasn’t fully crazy, that step from tent to trailer is a steep one.

Tent trailers have furnaces...and could potentially be towed by your current vehicle

30K will get you one hell of a 20 foot trailer. Not even sure you can spend that much on a new one.

    This one is pretty nice.

If you have no kids this one totally fits the bill:

He wants truck and trailer. Not just a trailer for $30k

for the record my hard-sided bunkhouse trailer that's less than a decade old in good working condition barely scratched the five figure mark. But if you want to drop 30k on a brand new 20' trailer it is VERY easy to do.
