    Default Favorite Email Provider Thread

Thought I would poll the interwebs on here to see what everyone here is using these days for personal email providers and why.

Been on Gmail forever, since it was invite only. Has generally been good but lately I have found it to be lacking more and more (Killing exchange support is a big one, online interface isn't great, have had issues lately with incoming emails being delayed substantially).

What does everyone else on here like / use and why?

Wondering whether its worth the effort to clean slate with a new provider.

Only ever have used gmail + work email. For a short while I used my University email but stopped shortly after I graduated.

I've had the same Hotmail account since before they were owned by Microsoft (1996). I've never had issues with it so I saw no reason to switch. Also because I signed up right when they started I have one of the few emails that just has my name with no numbers, or underscore etc. lol

Started with hotmail but the ungodly amount of crap that came to it frustrated me. Switched over to Gmail back when it was still selective invite only and haven't looked back.

Figured at this point in history everyone used Gmail.

Gsuite is like 5$ a month and I can use gmail on my own domain name.

I can also set up dummy redirects for free that I use for registrations to avoid spam.

I.e. pheoxs at domain is my actual

spam1 at domain is autoforwarded to pheoxs at domain and I only give out spam1@ for signups for a while. If I start getting crap then I just delete the forwarding and then create spam2@ and so on ....

Can even do one per site if you want to find out whole sells your info to spammers.

I think Gmail is pretty much impossible to beat for the average user unless you have some very specific or unusual needs. Integration is really good too with other applications and services.

I use Gmail for personal and whatever my work tells me to use for work.

Looking through my contacts, I'm actually not even sure I know a single person who doesn't use Gmail.

GSuite has been great. My only problem is that GSuite users are treated like 2nd class citizens by google. You can't use your GSuite account for a lot of shit such as Nest, some services available to Google Home, Youtube family sharing. That's just the tip of the iceberg, so you're actually forced to use a GSuite account AND a free account with the entire family if you want to leverage google products properly.

Have used gmail for personal for ages. Used a free gmail for a consulting gig once, and then used G-suite on my own domain for my self-employment gig. Always been happy with it. Still use gmail app even now with my work email, which is run through Office365 servers, and that integrates nicely with the gmail app.

    g-lyfe yo!

Same but I think I got it in 1998ish. converted to [email protected] when they made that available like 8 years ago or so. No reason to ever switch. I also have gmail as a backup but def prefer the interface of MS over it

In a perfect world I would have like to buy <my last name>.ca domain and have that as my email but unfortunately it’s taken

Hotmail was always tolerable but that's long gone, now. Every fucking login asks you for feedback on their #FreshNewLook #Outlook #BetaGoBeta and give us ten other ways to contact you "in case you forget the password" you've known for a decade+. Fuck off Hotmail!!

My needs are utterly basic so I like Gmail and find myself using more of their apps such as Sheets and Drive.

@killramos You must have gotten Gmail in them early days cause I didn't even know it was invite-only at one point haha.

Gmail ads are starting to bother me. Any way to get around these? Seems worse lately.

What ads? Anyone not running a ad blocker these days is crazy.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I don't see ads and I don't have an adblocker.

    Yup, that’s another one.

Google is so bad at user experience. But you’re stuck with them because their core competency of search is so good. Even GSuite on its own has its share of stupidity within itself. Google is killing off hangouts chat and replacing it with google chat (now renamed to hangouts chat) so we’re trying to enforce it by disabling hangouts chat (the old one) but the permission is tied to hangouts meet so we can’t have meetings with google reps because they won’t use anything other than hangouts meet. Hangouts chat (the old one) has been phasing out since October and we can’t disable it.

I swear google is just full of teams making their own shit and there’s zero collaboration between teams so left hand has no idea what right hand is doing, and we end up with this horrendous mess.

I've had an office 365/exchange/whatever its called for seven or eight years now. Gmail didn't (probably still doesn't) support two-way sync of calendars or notes to ios devices which was a deal breaker - I think I fought with that for like three days before I finally got so pissed I just gave msft my credit card. Costs like $120/year including a domain and 1TB onedrive so not a bad deal. Other than the search engine I'm not a fan of google anything really. Fucking web apps.
