The hell does Iran have to gain shooting down a passenger airliner and killing its own people?

It took attention of the world off the ww3 pissing match for one and immediately de-escalated it.

It actually benefits the anti-regime forces mostly. Which is why I keep saying who actually fired the rocket. There was a Iranian republican guard unit in the vicinity of where it came from - doesn't mean the man at the switch was acting as ordered.

Lets not forget that the plane's takeoff was delayed by an hour. The SAM missile site might not have known this, identified it as a military aircraft due to the flight pattern/altitude/time, and shot it down in a case of mistaken ID. That could happen pretty easily.

Just because a russian missile was fired from iran, does not 100% mean it was iranians involved. Could have been a rogue party/element within the country who wanted to down this specific ship.

The chances are good that its an iranian military fuckup, but that does not make it 100%.

I have no idea - how far fetched would this be for this country? Its not exactly Canada. And you dont need a massive SAM system - 1 or 2 MANPADS would do it just fine.

The Americans have sold MANPADS to pretty much anyone over there. There is huge concern from the American military about this and no doubt they have been downed by their own tech.
