The Americans have sold MANPADS to pretty much anyone over there. There is huge concern from the American military about this and no doubt they have been downed by their own tech.
Tor/sa15s are the next size up - takes a mobile launcher...

But this one looks to be Russian not American so...

Looks, based on what? An image from the internetz?

My whole point is to question everything that happened here. Accept nothing from anyone.

According to Iran now it took off with technical problems and was overweight.

Yet it made it to 8000' without issue then magically caught fire and immediately crashed.

we can go 1000 years and we will never have a country provide an excuse like canada has by saying it was just an "accident". Hundreds murdered and it's just an accident.

I guess it's too bad that Iran's not taking this out and has denied everything and anything. How long can canada continue to say it's an accident when there's much more going on.

If it was an accident shouldn't they have apologized by now?

irans admitted to shooting the plan down citing human error. Apparently they blamed the plane for turning towards their military base.

Trudeau will apologize before Iran will.

Here is an interesting development/coincidence, Sultan of Oman dead today with no heirs or successor.

Certainly doesn’t make the region any more stable.

Well I'm glad they are finally admitting it after originally calling it "impossible" they shot it down.

I guess it is pretty hard to dispute the video. They claim the truth was discovered after investigation, but what I think what is truly "impossible" is that they didn't know right away. No way that information regarding a believed attack wouldn't rip through their communication structure almost immediately.

I *do* believe they are truthful in saying they mistook it for a US military aircraft, and as tragic as this was, these sorts of things do happen sometimes during conflict. Not to say it makes things acceptable by any stretch, but there is really little point in hoping for justice because it just ain't coming. Canada may go the sanction route but in the end, nothing will ever come of it.

Fuck war. We tout ourselves for being so advanced as a species but in the end we are barely evolving at all.

Well maybe Mr trudeau can find it in his heart now to stop giving them foreign aid (since 2018 we started giving them money again) until they've paid compensation to the families.

What I've found most surprising in the past 2 days... I thought the 'muricans were nasty to eachother on twitter... WOW! Hit translate a few hundred times. Geezus, america needs to step up, they're way behind.

On the bright side - It really does look like the regime will come to an end; the public dissent and calling out the members of the elite/military is pretty wild. Khomenei is going to have a revolt on his hands soon - his populace is angry, november and decembers protests and mass killings. Looks like there's a fair bit of pushback over the person who posted the missles head - now having gone missing... Journalists threatened over posting pictures of the "not bulldozers" - quite publicly too.

Hopefully that quells the conspiracy theories. It was pretty clearly an accidental shootdown. Some people on here are giving the Iranian military capability and training a bit too much credit.

I for one am glad Iran has taken ownership of it. Its a black eye for their government, but it also is a bit different then their usual MO. Hopefully it will start up more internal pressure on the government to start behaving

People that blame Trump for this are, in my opinion, delusional. A civilian plane, shot down in Iran, by Iran, has nothing to do with the US, escalated or not. They shot, they are to blame. If you really want to blame someone else, then blame the ICAO who failed to close the airspace.

Damn. Oman was like the Switzerland of the Middle East. They quietly helped resolve a lot of conflicts.

Pretty easy to make a case that they shouldn't have nukes... Shooting down passenger planes by accident tends to make people a little nervous you may bump the button.
