    Default Rings Rings Rings

Coming up to that part of my life, doing the ring shop thing!

I feel Paris Jewellers is too cheap, and Tiffany is a bit much for my pricerange. Everything else looks bleh.
Anyone have any suggestions or things to look out for? I know nothing when it comes to jewellery (full disclosure). Any help is appreciated!

As good a place to start as any. If only to start understanding costs styles etc.

My recommendation is figure out somehow what she wants, either by asking her or recruiting one of her friends. It’s going to be her ring, get her something she likes.

From there get whatever rock you can afford, trade off is size versus quality. You can spend essentially any amount of money on them. Don’t let anyone tell you how much you should or shouldn’t spend, that’s totally your choice and trust me no one is going to ask to see the receipt.

But a round diamond and "cheap out" on colour and clarity but never ever never cheap out on cut quality. It shall be ideal or excellent and nothing less.

    0.98 carat
    Ideal
    colour H
    SI1 clarity

Moving into DEF colours and V or VV clarity adds piles of money that's tough to quantifiably see.

Also consider what I think is called d'amour for online purchases.

Prior to our engagement, we had been casually chatting about rings and ideas, so despite a lot of moving parts I ended knowing what to zoom in on. She knew it was going to happen but no idea when or where.

I'm very opposed to diamonds so I did some other sleuthing around for what I wanted (and I'm very particular!). In the end I sourced the gemstone from a NYC dealer (who sent me videos, loads of photos, and overnighted a few samples for me to see in person). Ended up using Tina at The Goldsmiths on 14st - I really dug her creativity, female perspective and experience. Cost for designing and making the setting was more or less average across the board. I recommend them very highly.

When I proposed to my wife I bought the Diamond and the ring from Bluenile. Hands down the best price.

Recently wife took the diamond to get it reset by Gem by Carati (Justin) and he did an excellent job. Wife was extremely happy with their work.
You could just buy the Diamond from bluenile and get it set by a local jeweler.

I started there, and ended there. Blue nile was the cheapest for the quality I could find. Shipped quick and easy right too me, and zero issues. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.

If your GF likes the Tiffany type style you could look at Simon G as a more affordable designer.

Gem by Carati has been great every time I've dealt with them. Could do something custom.

Bluenile will be tough to beat pricewise for a stone, but many stores won't want to sell you a ring and mount your loose stone, because of the margin theyre losing. I bought my wifes ring in the states because Maximes sucks, and even getting it resized locally was a challenge. Troy shoppe did help me out eventually after many wouldnt.

If you decide to do it piecemeal, you'll likely want an appraisal and once again many places won't do it if they didn't sell it. International gemological laboratory in inglewood helped me out and was great to deal with.

See Justin at gem. I’ve bought a few things from him over the years, including our wedding rings, and he’s been fantastic. Whether or not you actually buy from him vs. online, he will give you lots of words of wisdom on the whole process. I guarantee seeing him will be time well spent.

If you’re thrifty look at buying a moissanite Stone.
Also, buy your ring from Amazon.

    I did both.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

30 years this spring for us, neither of us wear our rings. My wife is way smaller than when we got married and she hasn't bothered to resize hers, my ring got smashed around my finger and I had to cut it off, haven't bothered to get it fixed either. Rings shouldn't define one's commitment to each other and monetary value of the rings shouldn't be a factor either.

So I guess it comes down to what do you know so far?

    -Your budget
    -Her wants:
    • Style of ring
    • Rock
      • Must be diamond
        • Must be mined?

      • OK with Masonite or Cubic Zirconium

    • Does brand name matter
    • Does the wedding band need to be a matching set

-Most women know nothing about the 4C's. Just Carat. So check in to see if she has done her research, and if yes what order of the 4C's you're gonna prioritize for budget.

Take a look at Costco In-Store if you are a member. Beacon Hill is a larger selection than the one at X-Iron.

FWIW, I've found prices on RareCarat to be better than Bluenile.

Another more budget friendly alternative is a lab-grown diamond. Supposedly identical to a mined stone at ~30-50% less... Could be considered a more "humanitarian" or "environmentally friendly" option, if those things matter to you / her.

Lab-grown are going to be better quality (unless you're spending stupid money on mined, then equal) because they'll completely lack inclusions using entirely pure carbon. Lab-grown =/= cubic zirconia and moissanite either so do your research.

Back when I was shopping, Canadian diamonds were a big deal and that's what we bought. My patriotic feelings have dimmed considerably since then, plus I know what the word "fungible" means now.
