So I got a DELL docking station but had to send it back. Work would not support it and install the drivers. The official work one is the Dell WD19DC. Before I purchase this... another idea came up.

I am being a cheapass about this. I admit it.

Ive have one screen connected though the HDMI port (Display port to HDMI).
Does anyone know if a second screen can be connected through the USB C port? Can this laptop support this..? (Dell Lattitude 3390 2-1)Im looking at Display port cables to USB C.
Does anyone know if this would work, or would two screens HAVE to go through a docking station?
That dell dock from your work does do dual monitors except one will be a display port and the other will be hdmi. Do you not have two monitors that support hdmi or really anything - you can go VGA-> hdmi and on your other monitor HDMI-Dport with the appropriate adapters.

VGA -> HDMI adapters are $$$ your better off just trying to use the ports the dock has or look at new monitors.

But generally speaking most monitors these days should have DP and HDMI.

Not 100% sure but i think what you are proposing would work. If i were you i would go to memory express and buy this:
    https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX67279

Keep one monitor on your HDMI port, then plug the other monitor into the HDMI port on this dongle (using HDMI to DP cable), then dongle USB-C into laptop's USB-C port and see if it detects both monitors.

if it doesn't work just return it. Hell i would even bring the laptop with you and ask them, they might have another suggestion that doesn't require drivers to be installed.

The two monitors I have are old (they were free). They have VGA and Display port connectors.

I have connected one through a cable adapter. Monitor > Display port adaptor to HDMI> Laptop.
The USB C port on the laptop is free. I was wondering does the laptop allow both ports to be connected to two separate screens without a dock..? Hence I can get a $30 cable for Display port to USB C connector...

So you are missing some sort of VGA to Display port or HDMI adapter and that would solve your issue, I will see what I have in my stuff.

I have a USB 3.0 to VGA adapter you could have for free... I've never actually gotten around to testing if it works or if you need specific drivers.

Thanks for the offer. I got it sorted in the end.
Big thanks to nzwasp. I got two screens working. I got a VGA cable from a random neighbour and I used a adaptor from nzwasp to go in to the USB C.
I plugged the other monitor to the HDMI slot.

Good to hear Tony. Now you can join our chats. On a partly related note, my laptop can now show 3 separate screens when I have it connected to the dual monitor dock. It wasn't able to do that when WFH started. I have no idea how it gained this capability, but it's neat.

Old thread bump. Looking for a cheap-ish dock that will do usb C charging of 65w+, along with dual hdmi or hdmi+dvi.
Haven't found anything under $250. Seems like a lot.

Not overly helpful, but I waited for dell days. possibly black friday or near the holidays and picked up a dell dock for 50% off.

I have a displaylink dock that doesn't charge, so I'm also interested, but need dual-hdmi(or dvi), as my DisplayPorts are being used by my tower.

Doh I would’ve just given you mine.

Sold it for $40 at the garage sale I did back in May.

some hardware changes that have moved this up the priority list, but honestly, it's still pretty low.

I power 5 monitors off of my shitty work laptop. I use a combination of the following.

Pluggable USB 7 port hub, 36w power.
    https://www.amazon.ca/Plugable-Port-...6587509&sr=8-9

and then I run one of these in line for each monitor
    https://www.amazon.ca/Plugable-Graph...6587784&sr=8-5

However, This may be more what would be suited for you.
    https://www.amazon.ca/Plugable-Displ...587956&sr=8-13
this will work for your monitors, while freeing up a laptop port to charge?

    I mean.

When you add up the cost of each of these peripherals on their own it’s not surprising what a dock that can do all of the above with one cable costs.

I need one myself but also agree they seem expensive. I’m considering the TB4 one from sonnet personally

Just to clarify, what I want is to plunk my laptop down, plug in one USB C, and that cable charges the laptop while the two monitors and any peripherals are run from the dock.

The DELL D6000 docks at work are excellent. The Anker that @cyra1ax posted looks promising. I will look.

While that one is cheaper. It doesn’t have a power supply so you need to add that on.

    Back over $200 bucks again.

I've shopped for these since I got an awesome one at work and I was blown away at how expensive they are.
