Guys, I got a 1999 civic with 168,192 km on the odo and it didn't start even with booster cables. But my 1992 oldsmobile cutlass supreme with mileage of 320,501 km started no problems.
I am guessing some of the wild humidity fluctuations prior to this cold snap led to water in fuel tanks. My car wouldn't start yesterday even though it was plugged in. Battery was reasonable but did give out before the car started. It started with a boost but was very difficult. I added some magic fluid to it and topped the fuel up before finally getting to work.
Water shouldn't be an issue but I do recall multiple days where my inside glass was frosted as shit before the cold snap, so that's why I'm thinking there were huge humidity swings and maybe modern gas doesn't have enough bullshit in it to deal with this.
Two completely different batteries with vary different CCA.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Batteries have a life span of about 3-5 years in general and even less in hot and cold climates. If you don't get your battery checked you may find it ends up frozen or can't hold a charge properly and when it drops into these cold temps.. dead battery.
Hey, tell that to Twin_Cam_Turbo, not the one who was trying to make a joke :PThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Not sure why you’re trying to make a joke though. Both trucks have dual batteries and tons of cranking power, but one starts no problem and one doesn’t. The point was to show that not all vehicles are equal, I doubt technology went backwards in the 7 years between them but one needs a lot more work to start in the cold. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. I don't think I've ever had a battery last less than a decade but I sure hear this "3-5 year" thing a lot. Am I that lucky?
I've never changed a battery in my life because it died, I don't think it's that unusual at least based on my experience. If you have a good battery it should last a long time. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

You implied that total mileage might have been a variable factor in it; if not, then still confusing to the reader. That's all. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Fair point. Honestly I think the issue is my truck uses glow plugs and Dodge uses a grid heater, and the glow plugs seem to be much more effective in the cold. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Imo, for 90% of vehicles, a new battery is cheap insurance. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
And oil change for my AMG was several times what a new battery for my mustang costs. Haha.

So used car salesmen shouldn't use the line "It was driven by a little old lady 10 minutes a week just to get to church and back" as a selling point anymore? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I have been told 7 yrs. I use Ctek chargers on all my vehicles. I don't trust anything Canadian Tire has a hand in.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Side story:
Co-worker was rocking an OEM Panasonic in his Toyota Rav4 for 12 years. Rolling the dice...
He rolled a tow job and a new alternator along with the new battery because of his lack of replacing the battery or at min, load testing it.
Yeah but how much was a battery for your C63? hahaThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
On a somewhat related note, IIRC newer M3/4s have lithium batteries in them. Probably eye-watering if you have to replace it at some point.
BMW batteries are particularly obnoxious. If I remember correctly X5’s were trashing batteries for a while there at something stupid like 1200-2000 a pop. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I’m sure the C63 was terrible and probably an hour of labour on top.

I know big-boy BMW cars require a dealership trip and at least an hour to change a battery because they need to get into the ECU and "advise the car" that its battery is about to be changed. $800 on a 5-series for example.
*Unless you connect 12V to it so it never knows it was changed...

Yet an i8 comes with a 50-pound lead acid battery stashed in the front somewhere awkward like footwell area... WtF!?This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Because racecar, or not?
Here is a happy side effect of the cold snap, that’s averaged over my last 100km
