    Default Garage door issues

    Another annoying cold snap question.

Ever since Friday when we got really cold, our garage door sensors keep tripping and the door won't close.
Have to park on the driveway, go into the garage; override the control so the door closes, and then exit through the house. 10 years in the house and this is the first cold snap we are having to do this. We also appear to be the only house I can see on my street with this problem.

We usually have this problem in the summer with the setting sun interfering in the beam, never in the winter.

Looking at the sensors, the one has a solid yellow / orange light; the other is a solid green light, so I don't think the sensor's are misaligned.

Any tips / tricks we can try when it warms up and can spend the time to trouble shoot this?

Is it the sensors at the bottom of the door or could it be something binding with the cold and tripping the pressure limit when the door is closing? Not sure if your opener pad shows codes or not.

Yes, sensors are at the bottom

Don't think we can. It's the standard builder push the button, with the lock pad. Nothing fancy

Also double check your downward travel and downward force. With these cold temps. it's likely things may have expanded/ contracted/ shifted/ stiffer than usual etc. and it might be setting off the downward force sensor (it hits the ground but it might think there's still an inch or two of travel, it thinks it's hit something, so it goes back up). Recently had to adjust these slightly after 2 years and it's been good ever since.

Doesn't spring up at all. Just refuses to go down.
I'll press the button for it to go down, it will start to go and then right back up, just the damn blinky light from the overhead unit laughing at me.

Can't really help with your issue but would assume it's due to the cold. My door is also acting up and gets stuck going up and have to manually guide it up to open a couple times.

I'd check the sensors then make sure they're clean, if there's a small speck of anything on them in the wrong spot it can throw them off completely. (And in this weather there's alot more slush/ snow/ water/ mud all around the garages usually!!) Blinking lights is definitely a sensor!

Probably the angle of the sensors. The metal sensor brackets contracting from being cold soaked and moving them jussst off.

Can't wait for the warm to come. Hopefully it will fix by it's self.

that is likely the pressure rather than the sensors. If it was the sensors, you would get blinky light without any movement.

If it is the sensors, then the cold is causing enough vibration to misalign the beam causing it to reverse.

There are lots of youtube videos on how to adjust the reversing pressure:

Also check the wires going to the sensors. Sometimes my door does the same thing. Sensors were aligned. Wiring to sensor was culprit. I literally just barely moved the wires and the proper light lit up on the sensor and had no problems after that. Finicky system.

The opener blinking light is your code - count how many times it flashes, it tells you if its sensor or force that's sent it back up. Check your manual to know which is which.

Most likely its closing force is a tad low - but likely there's a reason it's now showing rather than in years prior (ie you've got another component failing, probably a roller).

Thanks, I'll count and check that. Super useful tip!

How important is that black rubber strip on the bottom of your door. I swear mine ripped partly a few years ago and I didnt bother replacing it - my friends said his fell off last night and hes really concerned. My garage though is insulated on the walls and the roof where he thinks his is not (we live on same street). Also Im pretty sure that my garage is about 0 degrees in this weather I have a bottle of water in my car overnight that did not freeze.

No big deal. You'll get some air leakage, and in an attached garage, it'll end up colder, but it's not going to wreck anything
We must seek to understand each other, and even when we cannot, remain kind.

My garage door opener doesn't have manual force adjustment, just some automated stuff. I had the same problem in the past where it will start to go down then stop and go back up. I had to calibrate it for it to work.

combo of sensor wire on the one, connection was ever so slightly loose one on. The other was just off on alignment, I expect once it warms up the alignment will shift again.

Regarding the bottom seal of the garage door.... it's like a sweep on the bottom of a standard door. I had mine replaced last year and life tip.... coat the seal in Vaseline to prevent it from freezing to garage floor. I did it 2 weeks ago and I've had zero issues with freezing. Life changing!!!!!
