Because people are selfish and only care about themselves, if they get turned away then all the money they spent is gone too or they know that the medical system is probably better where they’re going but then that goes back to point #1This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Just for some perspective, and to highlight the media panic narrative (which has been the case with EVERY flu like illness):
in 2018-2019 (I believe Oct to April?) , some 65,000 people died from the NORMAL flu, around the world.
I don’t think the flu spreads as fast as this has beenThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

And Im not downplaying this illness, what I am mocking is the mass media hyperbole - esp so early on (what, after 5 deaths and then the whole thing ended up getting wall to wall coverage on global mass media? that certainly was planned)
Yes, people are dying, yes cities are being cordoned off, but that does not mean we should live in fear as per the mass media panic mode and saturated coverage of this.

The problem is this has been identified as a very real threat but people are going out of their way to put others at risk solely based on selfishness by ignoring what’s being mandated and finding ways to get out of the quarantined zone. Not only that but they mask their symptoms and hide it from other people drastically putting more and more people at serious riskThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

There are some situations where you have to contemplate the tail risk - if the potential worst-case outcome is sufficiently catastrophic. The mathematics of a virus like this make the potential worst-case something you must consider. The difference between this and, say, the regular flu is the unknown unkowns. We don't know the margin between "it's" fine and "it's really not fine". From my understanding, the R naught on this is much higher than standard flu...like 2-3. Total deaths is not a good way to gauge how scared of a disease you should be.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I dont know how old you are, but the fear based, mass media narrative here is exactly the same as it was during SARS (and other mass media fear-based coverage of infections disease outbreaks). This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
800-some people died globally during that outbreak, but the media was pushing "MILLIONS OF POTENTIAL DEATHS" narrative.
Nothing new in other words. The 'cry wolf' effect is present here.
Yes, wash your hands, wear a mask and avoid travel to infected areas - but dont live in fear.
Who said anything about living in fear? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
This is a risk assessment exercise - and frankly your approach isn't very data driven. What happened with SARS is irrelevant. How the media handle this is irrelevant.

They learned their lesson from SARS was the overriding communication from that press conference.
But during SARS they used assigned ambulances that had crews staffed with different respiratory protection and got enhanced decontamination between patients. And they communicated status and watched the first responders. (We had 4 EMTs get SARS remember)
But EMTs weren't advised what they were dealing with. Found out like everyone else.
So what lessons did we learn?

But seriously industrial respirators are still available, and are way better protection than dust masks.
