We went from average of 40/day in June to now average of 100/day in July and the month still got 2 weeks to go.
Everything lags. So even with mask mandate, it still won't stop gatherings and my bet is if we can hold on to 150/day until Sep, we kinda have this under control. I don't see how it'll get better than that.
Would be interesting to see if they ever release symptomatic vs asymptomatic positive numbers. Or if that datset is still too small as only people going in for testing are still either symptomatic or potential at risk (like getting spit on).
Okay. Let's skip the first question for a second. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I want to address your last comment: "I support masks...".
Consider the context here and look at what you're saying. It baffles me that people think masks are a political issue. It's a practical issue. Now, it's a policy issue. And your language implies that, to you, it's a poltical issue.
Here's the thing: it doesn't matter if you "support" it or not. We have enough evidence that, regardless of whether or not you "support" wearing masks, the usage of masks works in reducing contagion and spread.
So what you should be saying is "I will be wearing a mask...", or "I won't be wearing a mask...".
And by extension, "I trust what the data shows me" or "I don't trust what the data shows me".
Now, are we in a public health crisis?
I don't know. I think that depends on who you ask.
- The WHO thinks so
- Alberta Health Services thinks so
- The federal government thinks so
- The municipal government thinks so
- The CDC thinks so
- The EU thinks so
- New Zealand thinks so (and you'd think they'd be over it by now...)
- Most of the USA's leadership thnks so...
There is broad bipartisan acknowledgement that Covid-19 represents a significant risk to public health. It's plastered on every website you visit. It's even on the above-fold part of the Google results page.
If you're asking "is this a public health crisis", what I hear is "I am choosing not to believe the information being provided by every major health organization on the planet" and I struggle to reply back because I don't subscribe to that belief system.
And to be clear, the "belief system" I'm referring to is the rejection of science.
Like my rant about masks, whether or not we are in a public health crisis is neither up for debate nor is it political. It just is.
There are strong streaks of anti-authority and anti-intellectualism throughout society, even here on beyond, and it's hard to have an actual conversation on this or an increasingly large number of subjects if one or more parties involved subscribe to those beliefs.
So, if you choose not to believe the information available to you from the world's doctors and scientists, then to you, there is no public health crisis.
Otherwise, we are in a crisis by every measure and definition.
Bet your ass this will be treated more seriously if symptoms includes ED.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

As far as psychological impact on mask wearing on today's youth, what's the big difference between now and the 1920's? Did everyone's grandparants tell them stories about the time they or their parents were forced to wear masks? Probably not so much with there being actual problems in the world.

I have to say that I'm surprised at one of the guys I know at work that's alt-theory, maga hat wearing Trudeau hater and all of a sudden huge proponent of safety and follows all COVID19 protocol to the T. All because his wife and daughter are at risk.

California at 1/4 the death rate of New York. A lot of it can be attributed to figuring out what works to mitigate symptoms. By the time it hits Canada bad, we might be a solid 1/8th rate of New York. As always, time is a blessing. The more time you have, the more stuff you can figure out.
