So a whole bunch of people rip off taxpayers and in the end there are no consequences because the guberment fucked up the handling of the program? Got it. I guess the only silver lining is I'm pretty sure that money got pumped back into the economy immediately so at least I can imagine a net benefit to society as a whole.

Yeah, this is shameful that a program could be so bungled that the government essentially admits it gave the wrong people money, but it's small compared to the corruption and waste elsewhere. And folks will spend it, so it does help the economy probably more directly than most other schemes in Justins head.

Don’t worry, I assume none of these people set aside any for taxes either so CRA will still rip them a new asshole.

Can’t wait for the new headlines “Liberals say CERB won’t need to be paid back, but CRA still requiring taxes to be paid. This is confusing and I shouldn’t have to pay taxes on CERB either”

You phrased that much better than I was trying to haha

I wonder how that change is going to work, to my knowledge most people have their CERB T slips already.

No, they lost it all with GME.

    Remember Ralph bucks?

Remember how many outside of AB got Ralph bucks and boast about it?

I don't think I have seen a welfare program that is 100% foolproof and not exploited by people which program is not aimed at. This is no different especially the wording is so loose when the program is released.

Its probably a good thing they are going to start testing oil workers with PCR tests, being that I am currently at an oil camp right now, I am sure that people have covid here, people are coughing in the dining room and having coughing fits in rooms and people DGAF - I'm sure the attitude is "if I get sick then I don't get paid"

What are you referring to here? Is there some new news about ramping testing back up for specific industries?

I mean heaven forbid someone just gets sick....
You know with the thousands of other illnesses that are still prevalent in society.

But you’re right they probably have Covid- R.I.P

Buddy is a paramedic and he was chuckling at the way the counts work out. Break your arm (or whatever) and go into hospital overnight, fail a covid test, BOOM covid hospitalization.

    Same with ICU.

Just a funny thing to consider with the hospitalization numbers.

I`ve also heard, but can`t confirm, when you are tested and Covid positive and a stat for said day.
You are then re-tested and are still positive you are still a statistic on that day.

Therefore you are used as a confirmed case on more than one day.

I know what you are getting at, but all illnesses at site are suspected Covid. Any symptoms necessitate a trip to get a covid test and then quarantine in your room until test negative.
In the past when I was a regular at this site they would routinely get norovirus sweeping through the camp, I once got it while I was site and it was taken very seriously and I was quarantined in my room for half my shift.

And people firmly still believe there is nothing unusual about all of the above. Its all random chance.

It’s an arbitrary metric compared against equally arbitrary yardsticks. There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with that as long as it’s done thoughtfully, there is no one silver bullet metric.

It’s a good way to dumb things down for the kind of people who don’t know how stacked area charts work.

Assuming it's true, i'd be willing to bet that it doesn't happen often enough to be statistically significant. i.e. Out of the 430 or so hospitalizations we currently have in Alberta, how many of those went in for a broken arm as the primary reason for visit vs. people that went in because they had chest pains/couldn't breathe? 1%? 10%? 30%? My money is on closer to 1%.

Either way I agree that at face value it's silly to count that scenario as a covid hospitalization, but again it's most likely a wash so really no reason to get hung up on it.

How often are people with asymptomatic covid getting hospital stays on unrelated things?

I bet this number is really small.

Couldn’t tell you, I don’t have a good sense of the kinds of dumb things the average person hits the hospital over.

Just figured it was a funny situation to think about, hard to say why the significance of those incidents may be without knowing any other ER visit admissions stats.

    @Buster thoughts on below?

Weinstein seems to think lab leak probable due to lab location and how the virus is acting, TWIV seems to think it doesn’t line up due to genetic factors, all of it is way over my head
