Isn't a vaccine designed to prevent you from getting the undesirable symptoms of the infection rather than preventing infection, at all? I thought most of them worked that way.

No. A true vaccine will cause enough of an immune response so that if you encounter the real thing, a sterilizing response will occur.

It's why things like the smallpox vaccine stopped epidemics pretty well instantly, even its variants. Yes sonny, variants existed before covid. There are multiple variants of polio for instance.

The problem with this one is that the human body simply does not consider coronaviruses to be much of a threat, so inducing a sterilizing response is very difficult. Like I said almost three fucking years ago, scientists have been trying to make coronavirus vaccines for decades now, and have never succeeded.

I think China shows exactly the consequences of not having top shelf vaccines and having a hesitant population.

The minute lock down is lifted, million dies overwhelming hospitals and funeral homes.

Meantime, even poor countries that takes Chinese vaccines are fine. And Asian countries that take MRNA with 90% range coverage are even better and fully open months/year before China.

Vaccines are almost never expected to be sterilizing. We got lucky on a couple of them in the last century.
