Albertas problem is our citizens don’t gaf and are spreading this all on their own in private settings. We aren’t going to ban our way into solving that problem without setting up checkpoints around the province.
I'm gonna have to totally agree with this. A 2nd shutdown could have been easily avoided but not with the average Albertan mentality

Does anything need to be shutdown, or does proper and effective enforcement of the established restrictions need to be implemented, I think that's the better approach and a provincial mask mandate

Instead places are finding loopholes or straight out disregarding what is established and there's no penalty

Pretty good chance I'm the oldest. Sad. Dunno what I would say for a cutoff for actual old medically. 75?

Is that the first step in a collapsing health care system?
I hear that you can trade keychains for stim packs.

This is a tough one, because we might not have the evidence/data to satisfy everyone as to the need. We have been working off of imperfect information since March.

If you're not going to consider a different perspective, then ok - however think of it this way, how hard is it to wear a mask in a world wide pandemic that has killed millions? putting on shoes and socks is a lot harder for people than putting on a mask, if wearing a mask prevents a death 6 degrees away from you, isn't that worth it? sure you may not know that person however think of the butter fly effect
I don’t think it is much for policy makers to build policy around metrics like “if we start seeing x infections per 1000 people, we will enact xxxx policy with a review date of xxxx” as this isn’t a one size fits all problem. If a small town of 1000 in northern Alberta has had zero cases to date, I don’t see why they would need lockdown, masking for everyone, etc. That are required in a city of 1 million with 1000+ new cases a day.

If there is no travel restriction, that area should have the same policy.

The patch work is what is confusing for people and very ineffective. If that area put up army and guards on all entry and exits, they can adopt their own policy.

Sounds promising that schools won't be closing. So where are people getting it?

I suppose this is the point where I agree to disagree with some on this thread, glad it’s a civil conversation at least

I understand where you are coming from from asymptotic people shedding virus (or people who are symptomatic going out in public), but what I’m not understanding is what you think expanding the mask mandate from hot spot, municipal regions to more rural environments that don’t seem to be having near the scale of issues will do. Has anyone seen exponential growth risk in more rural, non-mask mandated locations in Alberta?
We don't have mandatory masks in Medicine Hat yet. We went from 15 active cases on Nov 3rd to 91 on the 22nd. In that same time Alberta has gone from 6110 to 12,195. Is that because we're riding the air bareback? I don't know.

Yeah, it's a bit extreme position but again like Buster said, don't underestimate exponential growth. If you are not physically isolated, it's just a matter of time it will come in as % infected increases around you. So why fight the inevitable especially rural medical infrastructure lacks the resources of big urban centers and will take longer to ramp up a response.

For sure, skr’s example shows where a slow reacting council can botch enabling restriction(s). Alternatively, if I put myself in the shoes of a store owner in consort (or any other town/hamlet), there has been zero cases, the economy has made my existence miserable before this, and the province wants to put more barriers to enter my store or lock it down entirely with no perceivable threat in the area, that strikes me as a really easy way to lose any public support for government action.

Lose lose scenario, suppose we fall on different sides of the “no win” equation

I think there isn't a corner on this planet is under no perceivable threat from COVID19. Not even Plague Inc safe haven of Iceland or Madagascar.

    This.

Literally every jurisdiction outside of China thought that they had no perceivable threat from covid at one point. They were all wrong.

According some fortune teller, there will be an Asian war in 2026 that will make 2020 economy looks like heaven on earth.

But I think those fortune teller are just closet Star Trek fans.

Have been waiting to see that for months. I'm sure places like Mexico won't GAF so Pina Coladas for all!

If Qantas says that's what you need to get on their flights, then that's what you need... don't like it? fly with a different airline
