My kids were asking about what got easter started.

My wife was not impressed when I told them it was basically the original Walking Dead, before AMC remade it.

So, enforcing bylaws that are meant to help put an end to the pandemic isn't a good use of time? Is that what you're saying? What if an outbreak occurs at a church that is breaking the rules? Would you then complain that the police should have been enforcing the rules, or would you just say that it's too bad the police had better things to do? The lack of enforcement is probably the biggest reason this thing is still dragging on.
Banning gatherings or handing out tickets to churchgoers isn't going to stop a pandemic, especially when the Crown doesn't appear too keen to actually get them in front of a judge and have restrictions under the lens of the judiciary. I'd expect calls to CPS about gatherings are pretty much bottom of the barrel in terms of priority, which is where they should rank in what CPS does everyday. A lot of restrictions in place are pretty much unenforceable and just pandering to people to keep them happy; restrictions that would have stopped this either weren't practical based on the realities of Canada, politically unappetizing or in contravention of the Charter. Although I get the distinct impression you view the Charter as a pesky document that should be ignored for certain groups.

    Kenney can fuck his hat.

No gyms except with a trainer, no dine-in except patios, retail cut down but schools can keep running full tilt despite a quarter of active cases being school aged kids.

Why do people keep talking about schools as if they are the same as other things?

How many places can get the needed capacity into their patios to be profitable though? Probably cheaper and easier to pay off and just run takeout

I was surprised how many places were doing it, my usual spots seem fine doing both

If the kitchen is already staffed, what is the fixed incremental cost to keep a patio open? 1 server maybe for a shift? If the manager who likely was there anyway doesn’t just do it for a small place?

Anywhere busy enough to need multiple servers won’t have an issue either.

    I guess we'll see.

59 days minimum of this until they start easing restrictions based on getting to 50% vaccinated and 27k doses per day. I won't be doing anything different, not for that long.

413 schools have cases / outbreaks at the moment. 17% of all schools. Seems hard to not consider that's a significant source.

And yet a quarter of all active cases are school aged kids. But I'm sure that they all caught it at home.

All a moot point anyways, restrictions easing are now tied to some ambiguously worded vaccination percentage.

It doesn’t matter whether they are significant sources or not.

Also the definition of outbreak in a school context is uselessly broad. 2 people in a school test positive in 2 weeks, boon outbreak status. Right up there with “mass shooting”.

Schools being a significant source is mostly irrelevant. The reason they are not being treated the same as a business with a similar risk profile is because they are different than a business with a similar risk profile.

It'll be interesting to see how this vaccine orientated re-opening goes. Alberta went from being near the top of doses per capita in Canada and now we've falling behind all the other major provinces. Here's hoping opening the large vaccine sites reverses that trend or the province realizes they need to put additional resources behind hurry things up. Hopefully every pharmacy will have doses soon and we'll utilize doctors offices too.

    Doses per 100k people:
    Saskatchewan: 19.3k
    Quebec: 18.5k
    Ontario: 17.8k
    BC: 17.7k
    Alberta: 16.5k
    Manitoba: 15.7k

Did anyone notice they have changed the goal posts in terms from hospitalizations to vaccination level.

    Yes. Everybody noticed that.

Publishing the goalposts in the first place was politically stupid. Doing it again means they didn’t learn their lesson the first time.

Politics 101, don’t make promises that aren’t in your control to keep.

The school data is misleading. Even if there was no close contact with anyone at school when positive, it's listed as a school case. That happened to our elementary school, no close contact, nobody had to quarantine or switch to online. Our middle school, a couple teachers caught it, and they moved the entire grade to online for 2 weeks. Nobody else caught it. 3rd school (friend's), they were deemed close contact, class quarantined and switching to online, their kid tested negative. Having data on 3 schools in my area, I feel pretty safe having my kids at school, especially seeing the hilarity at restaurants. It's not a significant source of spread with what I've seen, just people at the school catching it outside of school and ends there.
