Edmonton continuing it's "winning" with over double the daily new cases of Calgary. On pace to surpass Calgary in total cases in a few weeks.

And we really don't know what Thanksgiving does to those numbers until next week.

They worry that low sensitivity = false negatives.

    ELI5

End of the day, there is a period where you would be infectious but proved negative on these test strips.

But on the other hand, if you distribute these in volume, people like @Sentry that is basically asymptomatic can have a cheap and safe way to find out quickly and take appropriate action. End of the day, people are spreading it right now without knowing anyway. Having these available will at least take a portion of population off circulation and make everyone safer.

It will also be much better meter stick for entry to any establishment like hospitals instead just asking 10 questions and hope the subject doesn't lie.
    Excellent summary.

The regulators are given the task of approving diagnostic tests, and not screening tests. When you are talking about diagnosing someone, you need as much certainty as you can get - so the "gold standard" is the only option. They don't have an easy pathway to approving a test for populations, not individuals, so here we are. Everyone (including probably the regulators) understand that frequency is more important than sensitivity. Of course, Trudeau or Trump could both ORDER these tests approved through executive action. But what politician wants to get millions of tests into the hands of people who are going to realize that prevalence is actually 20x what our "updated cases in Alberta!" number is every day.

Politics has to be a huge part of it, lose lose for either side of the spectrum in the states, dems can’t afford to have too much good news for the economy and republicans can’t afford higher confirmed cases.

I think it's more about the scientists trying to protect the integrity in the age of anti-vaxxers and alt-theories.

The public tends to treat many issues as black and white instead of shades of grey. Most will not read into what these strips are testing for other than a + or - sign.

If someone is shown - and visited grandpa and he dies of COVID, you could only imagine what the QAnon circle will go nuts about.

I do agree they have a huge divide and a mentality that the other side can't get credit for stuff but to be fair the house did pass multiple versions of stimulus bills to try and help the economy and the senate won't even vote on them. There's lots of argues of the this side vs that side but I can't really agree that the dems are trying to avoid good news of the economy as one of them.

The Democrats have to basically force a stumble on the stimulus for the next month. Stimulus means cheques (actually 'checks') to millions of Americans from Trump. It also means a pop in the stock market and a negotiated win for Trump.

    Pelosi fucked this all up.

But she's like 80 and can barely speak clearly, the old bat.

Like Will Ferrell as George W. Bush used to say:
"I'm on the job 24/7. That's 24hr per week, 7 months per year."

well, everyone in my family has received negative results for our recent Covid-19 testing. Guess this one is "just a cold" which is good, though two of us still have symptoms so we'll be avoiding humanity (as per legal requirement) for a while yet.

Unless you've been in close contact with someone who tested positive, you're not legally required to isolate even if you still have symptoms.

    https://www.alberta.ca/isolation.aspx

Have symptoms but tested negative for COVID-19:
If you tested negative and have no known exposure to the virus, you are not legally required to isolate. However, it is important to stay home until your symptoms resolve so that you do not infect others.

You Do Not Have To Self-Isolate If:
you have not been exposed to someone known to have COVID-19 and you have not travelled outside of Canada within the last 14 days and.:
you are waiting for results and you did not have symptoms when you were tested and do not have any now
you have symptoms of illness that are related to a pre-existing illness or health condition, and are not new.
you have tested negative for COVID-19 and have no symptoms of illness
you have tested negative for COVID-19 and have a cough, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose, or sore throat that is related to a pre-existing illness or health condition. We do always suggest you stay home when sick with any illness, until symptoms resolve; however, if your COVID test is negative, this is not legally required.
Thats only for pre-existing though, I don't think a new cold would count for that. Rather if you had a chronic cough or something and you've tested negative then you can go back to work if it's just the cough continuing. But if a new symptom shows up then you should isolate again.

At least thats how I read it.

That's how I read it. If you have new symptoms, like a common cold, you isolate.

Which is a good idea, but not legally required.
