From reading the /r/canada reddit thread on covid. It seems to me that alot of people are unprepared for not working, lots of people wondering how they will pay rent and eat on EI.
Reddit? Probably the same people that spouted off in 2015 that they didn't feel bad for O&G workers all losing their jobs, saying they should have been "better prepared" because they worked in a "cyclical industry". (Who cares if oil recession lasted years amirite)

There is one ventilator, two people.
The first person is a 12-year-old with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. The second person is 74 years old and has COVID-19, too, but he’s an infectious diseases doctor and an expert in vaccine development.

    Who do you save?
The old guy because he has the likelihood of saving many. The 12 year-old probably will go to Tik-Tok and lick a toilet bowl with #fuckcoronavirus

I mean, I guess I'd let a 12 year old luck my toilet. Not really sure how I got involved in all this though.

    Today's update:

Cases are down because they stopped testing returning travellers and challenges with lab supplies.

It's a good response though. Idiots can wipe out communities because their healthcare system will get overrun really easily.
People who still think that this is a joke really needs to watch today's briefing from start to end.

“During the 2018-19 flu season, about 35 million people in the US contracted the flu and about 34,000 died, according to the CDC.”

We are like 2 months in and already at about 38,000 deaths worldwide, even with the lockdowns and distancing, which we didn’t do with the flu obviously..

So the “flu kills more people” nutters can finally shut up with that line.

Why are you comparing US flu deaths with worldwide covid deaths? Worldwide flu deaths sit at around 500k a year.

I think overblown is how I would lean. There is no denying what is happening, but the question of how one views the resulting ramifications is more relevant. Some people feel every single life is worth saving compared to saving the way of life of billions while others are the opposite. I guess it isn't really a lot different than an all out war. There comes a point in time when the populace decides some lives are worth sacrificing to preserve the way of life of the majority. The question is whether or not we are there yet or at what point will we be there or will we even get there? Tough to say but there is no doubt we are in the middle of it all.
The difference with war is the people who go off to die are volunteers. With a deadly virus, the people you plan to sacrifice to maintain your way of life get no say in the matter.

I really don’t like where you’re going with that though. You don’t get to decide to sacrifice my friends and family just because you’re out of work. That’s fucked up.

So, eight strains? Does not bode well for mutations in the future. But I can imagine that if you live through the first one, any mutation will have a much tougher time being lethal to any survivor.
