So yeah, it's surely all about Health!
Meanwhile, Hollywood celebrities can party it up at the Emmys maskless indoors (except the servants, of course) while everyone else in the LA County has to wear masks indoors vaxx'd or not.
But it's all about Health and Stopping the Spread!

Nobody is disputing sacrifice you make. Nor are they dismissing that. I am sure all of us here on the forum regardless of our opinions appreciate the work you do. Ive obviously hit a nerve and my post was not a attack on you or front line workers. It was a challenge to the idea that there is a shortage of workers and institutions that propagate that for their own needs. My posts generally do contain a element of jest, weirdness, exaggeration of the stereotypes. I do this for sake we all need to look at serious issues from a slight comical angle. It takes the edge of things, like having a drink after rough day. I apologise and I reach out to buy you a beer (you can pick me up in your new jeep Wrangler.. just kidding!! English HUMOUR!). Im sure ExtraSlow would be happy to join us too.
I don't hate educated people. I admire them. The Unions don't like educated people from abroad and will create nonsensical barriers with other institutions to dither and delay those trying to compete for such jobs. Unions act in the interest of its members NOT the patients or outsiders. There is a double standard with a subtle element of stereotyping and discrimination. In particular against educated Canadians that are not born here. Do you think non born Canadians are not educated? A lot has Changed in the world from the 1980's.
Its not a education issue. If we take the provincial immigration process. If one goes thrugh that like I have (this can take years) the application is done again at a federal level. Again they will ask for qualifications, security clearance etc. Then one has the issue of citizenship and proving English from England. Then you the whole credential issue in the job market. At this point at least five years have passed.
Its not just high level jobs. Its low level jobs too. I won't go into too much detail as it would be a super lengthy post. But basically I cannot be considered for a entry level job at the city of Calgary due to the convoluted hiring practices pushed by the Unions. I raised this problem with councillor Shane Keating. He was in denial as he supported the unions. I pushed, and questions were raised at council. The answers given showed there was slight bias. On that outcome Shane Keating ran away and said he could not take it further. I pushed further. When I met with City HR managers. They were in denial. I then presented evidence of me being removed from the hiring by the system. I presented evidence of a better way of doing things by showing equivalent public sector jobs in UK that anyone in the commonwealth could be considered for. This were Union jobs too.
In short it came down to the Unions blocking any progress. Even when I paid and applied to have my University qualifications to be assessed to be the Canadian high school equivalent. The provincial Unionised workers dithered, delayed and rejected my application because I did not follow a process that did not exist. I had to apply all over again.
This issue was also brought to Rick Fraiser who just put the file behind him while he grinned like a cheshire cat(I never heard anything after). I also brought this to Ric McIvor(provincial), this was just passed onto a admin. Nothing was really done. These cases would have actually worked in the UCP favour in building a strategy against the Unions.
The entire point of my case was to highlight two things. When a evidence based case is brought to a City Councillor or MP. He will do his hardest not to understand the issue and do nothing as there is a bias towards unions. The second point was to highlight when a problem is presented with evidence, and solution to City managers. Union backed city representatives will deny, dither and then state they cannot do anything because of the Union. Even though the evidence creates a mandate for change for doing something better. Unions will block. Elected representatives will no do anything or they lack exprience to build a strategy.
The same applies to entry level federal jobs. I raised this with MP Tom Kmic who wrote to the Liberal Government. They(lLiberals) just refused. So they want the immigrant ethnic vote. But when it comes to actual issues being resolved. Its a plain fuck you but thanks for the vote. Thats why George Chahal really went to be a liberal MP. Won in the NE yesterday. He will actually start raising legitimate issues (I hope).
I have sat on round tables with ministers, highly educated medical professionals (medical and non medical). THe sad trusth is, many of these people leave. I had a high specialist Russian medical professional that was planning to leave to the UK as it was a better process.
The issue I raised with adminsitration and elected representatives and a great case study. I can advise in Financial Institutions and Insurance which are regulated. But I can't be a bus driver.
Nurses salary in Alberta are above the national average wage. Cost of housing is low here. I would not say they are rolling in it. But they are doing very well relative to the country and other countries as a whole. If there are issues in the job as you have highlighted, then there has to be a level of hard accountability not just towards the government but towards opposition parties and Unions too. It cant be one without the other.
I know people in health care. Senior people too. All I hear is bitching about the government and how useless managers are. All I hear is UCP bad UCP bad. What I am about to write next is incredibly dangerous.
I joined the UCP. Not because I support them. Its because some things have to be held in the public interest whether I like it or not. Healthcare is one of them. We have a weak NDP opposition that only seeks to gain votes on public emotion and do nothing. You can't have omelettes and yet at the same time kill your golden goose. Watch BBC parliament tv channel on the UK house of commons. There are ways the opposition can hold and manoeuvre the government on such issues. Then on comparison one can see how shit the NDP are. This allows the UCP to act with no real accountability. That is dangerous.
Last year I was at the UCP AGM. As a member I get to vote on polices ('Its not a dictatorship?' I hear you all say.. shocking I know). There was a policy to privatise parts of the health care. I voted no. Only 700 people voted. I was out voted by only 77 votes. Thats a shockingly low number on a issue that affects so many people.
I have turned to my friends in healthcare and those anti conservative. I have asked and begged for them not to order a pizza for one week. Use that money and buy a UCP membership and vote on these policies as it affects their job. Nope nothing, all I got was anger, UCP BAD UCP BAD and 'it should not be like that' comments. I asked for that anger to be put aside focus on this as its a serious issue and a way to hold a provincial party to account or at least have a say in the policy making. Nope. I got nothing.
You guys don't realise I am actually batting for you. Challenging the UCP and the Unions is in interest of sick patients and healthcare workers.
But instead healthcare workers are happy to strike and get angry. But what is that going to do? It does fuck all.
Lets stop for a moment. Now this is the dangerous part. If those healthcare workers bought a UCP membership. They get to vote on polices and they get to speak at the AGM and discuss how they are developed. You know what means. It means you have Jason and the healthcare minister by the balls. Guess whats going to happen when you have them by the balls and give them a little squeeze..? They will look down and start to sing. This is the song they will sing:
Now they will be pulled to the centre ground by the balls.
The NDP wont like this. Notley will throw her tray of cup cakes and jam dougnuts in the air. She will stand to attention and send her minions out. Her monthly pay cheque and pension is dependant on votes and apathy. If her voter base stops reacting emotionally, she looses all credibility. She is loosing her target audience. This in turn drags HER to the centre ground. She has to start doing some real work on holding the opposition to account. In particular healthcare. Neither of these parties will want you to do what I posted. Because it forces them to the centre ground and fight for it. They actually have to listen due to the voting structure within the UCP party. This also drags the unions into it.
But no. People are happy to bitch and complain about the UCP. But yet they are not willing to do enough to make a change, write a letter, put a case together, stop eating pizza one day and vote on UCP polices. Its not just the polling station where people can make a difference.
I see the people who work at AHS (across all levels) who bitch and complain. But wont get involved and stand with me in holding the provincial government to account at the AGM for the cost of a pizza and participate in helping those qualified to enter the workforce. A double standard.
Until I see those faces standing with me at the AGM, round tables and raising issues to have qualified Canadians competing for jobs. I have every right to question the credibility of the Unions and the opposition.
@dubheadWho hurt you?
I know more than a handful of nurses and they do alright for themselves but are not the stereotype thrown around here of rolling in cash from taking advantage of the OT system AHS has forced on them. Most I know would prefer it went away in exchange for consistent schedules.
Immigrants struggling to transfer there credentials is hardly a new problem and certainly not limited to health care.... on the Dr front it seems all to easy to get credentials and if rate MD is a barometer when hunting for A GP for the fiancée it's becoming harder and harder to find one who isn't from a country with little to no respect for women.
I lost my sister in the UK to Cancer last year. Stage 3 lung metatarsis. It moved too fast.
She had a team of specialists, surgeons, doctors, outside care workers, and nurses fighting to keep her alive even though it was a loosing battle. She was dead within 11 months. She was a single mother with two kids. She held on till her daughters 18th birthday and then passed a few days later. That medical team was not all British. A lot of them were immigrants with highly specialist expertise.
In London my dad died in ICU a few months back. When we went to see him right after he had passed. His entire medical team that fought to keep him alive were mostly immigrant medical professionals.
After dealing with all that shell shock, trust me I know the value of healthcare and the work they do. I also know and acknowledge the limitations of public funding. After seeing the diverse skill sets of healthcare workers in the UK. Then traveling back to Canada, seeing this bullshit within AHS managers, Unions manipulate the credential issue and complaining. I sit here knowing that there is a better way to do things. Thats what really hurts. I hope that answers your question. Thats why I challenge the Unions, UCP and NDP to come to the centre ground.
While my dad was sick and my sister was dying last year I still tried to stand up vote on healthcare policies to help other people here in Calgary. I dont earn much. But it highlighted those who work in healthcare who earn more than me through public funds refused to participate in something that effects us all. A double standard.
Somethings have to held in the public interest above Unions and Politicians. Why? I believe its better to at the table talking than screaming outside the door.
I honestly don't give a shit about where a healthcare worker is from. I want the best people helping those sick. Healthcare is incredibly complicated. We need diversity not for the sake of diversity. But because we need a diverse range of people to solve complicated problems. We need to have a system where we have access to the BEST pool of ideas, and talent. On this issue of immigration and credentials...compared to the UK. The process is shit. The Union purposely makes it difficult across the educated spectrum (high and low). My cases raised with elected representatives over the last ten years and public sector workers is the audit trail that proves it.
Turbo medic. The offer of a beer still stands.

At the end of the day the two biggest obstacles to having an efficient, affordable, world class healthcare system are the Government and the Unions, they just alternate between who is the bigger one at any given point in time. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Is now the time I tell you I've only been a Canadian citizen since 2009 and worked the first 10 years of my job on landed immigrant status/Permanent resident? It was never a barrier once to me. It hadn't even come up once. Citizenship or PR is all that was neccessary, and the only english I've ever had to demonstrate proficiency in was in my citizenship exam......I mean I guess we all have our own experiences, but numerous colleagues of mine had no issue with transferring from Europe, UK or the US, and my workplace is quite diverse. Nurses have a near open door for international work as their education is more broadly standardized than mine.
Anyhow, there's time for humor for sure, but when it comes to just trying to belittle or undermine a set of people because you think its funny, honestly just makes you come off like a jerk
