I am likely guilty of assuming 1 which is probably inaccurate. Perhaps the flu vaccine is the only one where this is done. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be done for a much more serious virus like coronavirus, though.
The thing with flu vaccines being switched up annually is that they are targeting whatever strains they expect will be dominant that year - but many of the strains are already known, and have been for years or decades. New variants do pop up, but the flu vaccine production system is so mature that putting one together for a new variant and producing on mass scale takes only about six months if I recall correctly. With Covid they don't have nearly the knowledge base or level of streamlined production in place for the flu, so they are still very much in a reactive situation rather than a proactive one. I expect that the Covid vaccine system will eventually become basically the same as the flu one, and I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they integrate both into a single annual shot.

Why is everyone acting like there's been no updates to the vaccines in here?

Moderna already submitted their updated booster that targets both the original strain and the BA.1 omicron strain to Health Canada for approval on June 30th. UK has also approved this new vaccine for use as of yesterday.

Pfizer began it's rolling submission of it's bivalent BA.1 adapted vaccine July 25th for Health Canada review. As well they've also recently begun trials of a BA.1 and BA.4/BA.5 vaccine to target the strain emerging just now. That one would probably take until next year to clear regulatory approvals.

Both Omicron BA.1 targeted vaccines will be available to Canadians this fall.

Fuck Covid. Just got notice today that almost my entire family in Kamloops spread it amongst themselves during a wedding shower on the weekend.

I had planned to head down there this week for my first visit in about a year and a half. Now I have vacation time off, and nowhere to go. More importantly, we have a couple family members including my mother who aren't in peak pulmonary health so I'll be sitting here at home worrying.

Not gonna lie - it's been a rather shitty month.

Had they gone to more traditional vaccine tech (unlike the MRNA types) then I don't think we would be having these spread issues and 'anti-vaxers'. The use of that unproven tech has been the main point of contention since the start regarding safety, implementation, adoption and effectiveness.

J&J and AZ were “traditional” (modified adenovirus) vaccines and people still didn’t want those.

Why not just go instead of worrying? They won’t be infectious by the time you get there anyways. If you’re vaccinated and healthy, there’s no reason not to. That’s why there’s no isolation period anymore, getting it isn’t a big deal assuming you’re healthy and vaccinated.

What’s the point of driving a try hard Land Rover if you can’t show up to family reunions in it anyway.

Heck, not making it there might even be a perk with some family members.

Maybe he's treating everyone like they're unvaccinated again?

I don't have any friends (that I actually see in person) who aren't vaxxed. But if I did, they would not be welcome in my house.

I don't know. There's a group of people who love to think they're oppressed. Look at how many of them consider themselves victims of not catching a disease. I doubt many of them know or care what the differences are in the vaccines.

Well, the (arbitrary) 5 days from the start of symptoms. Which puts us at Friday at the earliest. So, not exactly. As far as not going because I'm vaxxed, I really just don't want to get it; I've had it before, and it sucked. We are going down in September for my niece's wedding, so that just seems like better timing. Now my buddy isn't out his minivan either.

Anecdotal but over the past month been seeing a lot more people I know catch covid compared to earlier in the year. Some first timers and some re-infections. A lot however are really struggling with the after effects of fatigue even though all the flu-like symptoms fall off really quickly.

I went through that in February after it, took probably 6-8 weeks to actually feel 100% energy levels again without crashing hard by 6pm and barely making it through the day. Even though I'm vaccinated and not really in any significant risk I still sure as fuck don't want to get it again. Definitely wouldn't go visit family that's sick and just barely getting over it.
