I was in Ontario for work this week - Alberta is a joke to them, everytime I turned on the radio their hosts (music hosts etc) were talking about how fucked we are and how JK is a mess.

Covid seems almost non existent in Ontario as well. Although I did drive past a holiday inn that had been converted into a hospital (i thought that was strange).

I scanned the code for fun with my iPhone to see what happens and it loaded up the information into the Health app. Looks like it pulls from covidrecords.Alberta.ca so the data is not embedded in the QR code itself. Neat.

The data is stored on the QR code. The covidrecords thing is the verification, which isn't up yet. Interesting that they used a standardized system for this, which is why we're able to import it into iOS 15 health app.

Didn't even know it was a thing, but nice to see it adopted which hopefully should make life easier. Scan phone, show ID, done.

It doesn’t do anything different for you. It makes it harder for antiva people to fake one.

Today, it makes it harder to create a fake record. You still can with technical know how since the validation isn’t up. Also its easier to pull up having it stored in an app instead of a favorite image in photos.

When the validation side is up, it’ll be impossible to forge.

Once it’s all implemented, the iPhone integration makes it super easy to scan and just show ID to validate who you are. Less fumbling. I believe iOS 15.1 will have it up as a wallet card. Potentially even nfc support.

So the old records are no longer valid?

BC is QR code only as of Sep 26th. All paper form record are only for out of province travelers and early period of program between Sep 12 and 26th.

So as an Albertan, your fake one will have to be out of province. it's harder but not impossible.

Again this is why a national strategy is the correct action here.

There will be an Alberta authenticator app released that businesses can use to scan and verify the QR code eventually. That'll be the verification side of things so you can't just edit the pdf and change the name to yours.

As a business: Scan their QR, see the name on the app, verify against their ID. Let them in.

Presumably there will be a overlap where both are accepted then eventually it'll be QR only, that's how BC has implemented it.

Since it’s a public standardized format, don’t even need an AB app. Any app that conforms to the standard will work, once AB enabled the validation.

The authentication is just a public key. There’s zero reasons for whatever authentication system to have to query it every time, download once and ready to authenticate everyone. It’s a single key that will authenticate everyone’s QR codes.

Whatever scanner app basically will have the published key, scan your QR code, get all the info there, and validate the signature and show it’s authentic. There’s nothing new in this tech, standard fare private public key authentication.
