Did we decide if this had become something to truly panic about, or is it ho-hum? I can't decide.
Do you or someone in your household have a compromised immune system?

Yes -> Don't worry about it until the first confirmed case in Calgary, also don't travel, just in case.
No -> Don't worry about it until the first confirmed case in Calgary, also prepare a puke bucket, just in case.

New numbers for the day. Around a hundred deaths a day now. I'm kinda watching how things pan out for the infected cruise ship. 135 cases on board now, will be curious to see what that translates to for recovered vs don't make it. Hopefully the onboard medical staff can contain things.
Well, considering the age of the typical cruise ship patron, I'd say they have something to worry about.

Why do you guys think this only affects the old/young/immunosuppressed?

China has not disclosed demographic data. What is available are social media posts and videos that escaped censorship showing wide spread impact to all ages.

Today, WHO noted that this virus can survive in hot and humid conditions, in addition to cold and dry. They also think that the virus can survive for 9 days on non porous objects including door handles. This is 4 times the rate of the flu.

Some researchers have also stated that the impact on lower respiratory function can last for over 6 months after recovery.

This is a pretty bad ass virus that can cause organ and respiratory failure while being super infectious.

We don't. We just think it really only kills the old/young/immunosuppressed. Otherwise it's just the flu, which still sucks, so have a puke bucket ready.

Flu already killed 10k in US and 600+ in Canada so far. From that perspective, this Novel virus is weak sauce.

Remember that 2009 H1N1 infected up to 200M and killed up to 400k.

Typical flu kills around 650k per year.

With the original stats showing the majority of cases were in that 35-45 range and... The doctor who whistle blew I'm reasonably sure wasn't immunocompromised...

It also doesn't make a lot of sense that over 1/4 of cases are needing intensive care. How many immunocompromised people are in Wuhan? Surely it's not 1/4 of the population.

There's a reason the Chinese have shut down 10% of GDP, and continue to quarantine... Because even fogging the cities with disinfectant, isolating the sick, it's still spreading rapidly...

There is something like 2-3% of the entire world's population being quarantined right now in China.

If the only thing that can kill it is AIDS medication, that's actually pretty fucking serious haha

Antiretroviral drugs work by inhibiting viral enzymes that influence the replication of the virus, so it kind of makes sense they were using aids drugs to treat it.

At least 500 medical staff in Wuhan infected with 3 deaths. Remember that these are trained people with the full body condoms.

So, the expert guy is saying that 60 to 80% of humanity will eventually get it because of impossibility not to. Impressive.

WHO has named this COVID-19. Not a NKOTB anymore.

Medical workers in full protective suits descended upon the Hong Mei House in Tsing Yi district on Tuesday, swiftly evacuating more than 100 people in 34 households after the four were found infected with the new pathogen from the same family of coronaviruses as SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Health officials called it a precautionary measure after a 62-year-old woman diagnosed with the virus Tuesday was found living 10 floors directly below a man who was earlier confirmed with the virus. The woman’s son and daughter-in-law who live with her were among seven new cases reported Thursday, raising the city’s total tally to 49.

The risk of transmission is the same as the regular flu, according to the interviews with virologists that I have seen so far, AHS, and Health Canada. It is contracted exactly the same way - you can get it from touching your face after touching a contaminated surface, coming into contact with someone who has it, etc. If people follow standard flu-season precautions, which most people do not (washing hands often and for 30+ seconds, never touching your face, etc.) the risk is low that you will catch any droplet-based illness like this one.

Yeah, railings, elevators, doors, etc ... It's pretty easy for a virus to spread to others within a building. It's not like the virus magically buried through 10 floors ... that's just shitty journalism since its irrelevant. Everyone in the building uses the same doors and entrances.

Exactly - the fact that the news article says they were 10 floors apart means literally nothing, especially since it was probably an apartment building where there are people touching everything everywhere in common areas. Prime example of fear mongering.

So then why evacuate a full tower? Authorities are claiming a plumbing problem

R0 of 3.11 is more than double the transmissibility of the common seasonal flus.
