Medical personnel in proper PPE have been casualties. We're totally fucked if you all get infected. Stay safe.

Why would we want a lot of slack in our healthcare system? It's already expensive enough as it is.

The slack in the system will come from people who are already abusing the system being put to the back of the line? Want to use an ambulance as a taxi? Too bad. We could do that last month...not this month.

Drunk and bleeding in the ER? sorry here's some super glue and a couple of butterfly sutures...on your way loser.
We've been busy and overstretched for years now, but I can't even describe how bad it has been the last 3 months. Sustained lengthy periods of time with no ambulances available (including the ones we pulled in from rural communities further exacerbating the problem), people not getting time appropriate responses with fatal consequences (no details, but yes its happened), ambulances still stuck in hospitals for 8+ hours sucking up most of our fleet, hospitals running at 110%+ capacity regularly (one was at 135% at one point a couple weeks ago). And we haven't had anything bad happen here. No MCI's, no massive outbreaks, this is just Calgary on a regular day. We are fucked, there is no way around it.

The recent years' cutbacks have exacerbated the situation. Yet our leaders have not restricted flights from even high risk regions allowing safe haven for potentially infected people with nowhere else to go.

I hope they find a way to mobilize the community so that we can help. Education is key. Deminishing the impact of this virus and being irresponsible will put unnecessary strain on the system. Don't forget that many health care workers died of exhaustion in Wuhan recently trying to save lives.

I completely agree. We have soft pre-screening but they're not asking the right questions beforehand. So I'll respond to something like a chest pain or shortness of breath, and I'll come in and within 15 seconds its established its ILI, so what precautions can you take, you can't mask up into every call (although CFD just implemented a no entry until EMS clears policy). We use regular PPE on everything, lots of hand sanitizer throughout the day, mask up coughs, all that jazz. The hard policies have to come from above, there's zero ability for street level influence

How much of that usage requires ambulances or the hospital?

The ambulances stuck at hospitals thibg always seemed like the easiest and simplest health care inneficiency to solve. That one offends me as a taxpayer.

We need to make it undesirable to use ambulances or hospitals unless it is a truly serious situation.

Canadians need to get less Lefty about their health Care system or deal with overcapacity and bad outcomes. Can't have both.

The only practical way is to add a $ to it.
Anything else you will always get those who waste everyone's time and resource no matter what.

Why are ambulances stuck at hospitals for 8+ hours? lack of staff or something else?

I've said it before, people are going to start seeing that Canada isn't closing borders, then will purposely book flights here knowing damn well they're sick to get treatment

Yes, that's one problem that really should be solvable. Surely there's some way of staffing a hospital with someone qualified enough to stay with a patient, to free-up EMS to go back out and do their very important job. Maybe not as costly as an RN, but something has to be better than the current way.

What makes me think this will continue through the spring and summer. Italy is room temperature right now, and they have having a heck of a time trying to contain it.

I thought they needed to do that so processes can begin allocating funds to be released if needed, etc.

Just found out my 87 Year old Grandma was transferred to the Lynn Valley Care Center a month or so ago... My family in Vancouver have been allowed access all week and even this AM before they went public. My uncle a Surgeon was there this Am dropping my grandma off a cell phone since their phone system is down in parts of the place. He said next to no protocols in place he had no clue there was an issue.

Sort of daunting thinking about things hitting close to home

Texas appointed judges to preside over quarantines among other items.

Still low risk in Canada though. /S
