Just out of curiosity, anyone know what these outbreaks happen predominantly in China? I visited there back in 2000 and was told, and witnessed, that bronchitis/colds/flu were hard to stop because people were spitting everywhere. True enough. I think the government since then has worked to stop the practice. But that only explains why it spreads, not starts. One could say that population density or food handling are issues too. But that would be the same for India/Pakistan/Indonesia and a number of other countries. Yet we don't hear about worldwide pandemics starting there. What is it specifically about China that is causing these issues?

China is basically a third world country masquerading as a first world country. It has high population density, poor controls/limits on animal-human interaction, a number of cultural factors which are disgusting and unsanitary (spitting, amongst other things), a belief in folk-medicine, a gov't which seems to prioritize international PR. ALL of this combined with a built out transportation system.

    Bad mix.

2500 infected / 80 deaths is today's number from china.

HK rioters burned down a building that was going to be used to isolate nCoV patients.

The building did not burn down, fire was limited to the lobby area.

Suppose I should link a source eh?

    https://amp.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/...mpression=true

Police descended on a public housing block in the border town of Fanling on Sunday as roads were blockaded and fires set by people furious over a government proposal to use the development as a potential quarantine site amid the widening coronavirus epidemic.

? Is the building more useable today as an emergency treatment facility than it was yesterday?

Set fire to... Caused damage, caused smoke damage.

Not so useable, but HKers want the government to take action on the nCoV situation

Simple question, did the building burn down? If the government wanted that particular building in a more useable state then it probably wouldn't take much to make it so.

Because in China, nobody will know why you die and corpse burned.

I can't believe we are allowing unrestricted air travel from Wuhan into Canada still. Wow
5 million just escape to other ports that isn't shut down, who is willing to make to call to shut down all Chinese flight connections?

Even if you do, what about Japan, HK and Singapore where more Chinese will travel thru.

And they carry that same attitude wherever they go? I guess that makes some sense, although presumably if they are selfishly travelling outside of China, the better, more trustworthy health care system is part of the appeal?

Maybe China needs to build a wall. They need someone who is an expert in building great walls.

I'm pretty much a banana at this point but from what I can tell from older folks is they mistrust hospitals and health care professionals. I assume the view could still be held by many people from mainland today.

Shutting down air traffic doesn't do anything. But push more virus out into the surrounding regions... People are still going to travel to escape - the harder we make it on them the less likely they are to come forward. Look at the France and Toronto cases already, disguise the symptoms get through border screening then go hide in the city.

Public health needs to be actively monitoring everyone arriving since the 13th - just like the UK has done, daily check-ins with a public health nurse, 2-3 day blood work intervals. You get sick you're quarantined.

The current free for all is where we're going to have problems...

A mass cull is the best thing that can happen to the human race. A reduction to 200-million people worldwide would solve pretty much every major problem facing humanity. Nobody wants to admit that, but it's true.
200 million? Try like 2 billion if you want to see some positive effects.

It would solve our climate change issue for sure.
That issue could be easily solved by stopping to pretend we are having an issue in the first place.

Main thing I'm finding odd about this new threat, is they keep saying they learned from SARS. But haven't seen a whole lot being done. So what did we learn from SARS? Leave it alone and it will figure itself out?

    speaking of 200m

here was a model someone put together. we would reach 200m deaths by September if this thing isnt contained. you can start to panic if the number continues to get close to this model month after month.
