you have a small business and it hurts to stay closed. I absolutely appreciate that. That’s why the gov is hooking up the care package.

Keep the doors open, and you’ll quickly find that medical services are exhausted and significantly more deaths will occur due to over saturation.

We have a choice, quarantine now, try and control the situation and the economy will suffer.

No quarantine, significantly more deaths, the economy will suffer.

You’re looking to trade in one bad outcome for both bad outcomes.
It's kinda crazy but due to the Fear of COVID - only real essential cases are going to ER. Not being flooded with hypochondriacs. Most places have <30 minute wait time with nobody in the waiting room (for the YELLOW) section. The RED COVID area isn't terribly busy at South Health, but definitely a high stress situation.

Sweden is a "best case" scenario for that type of strategy. Strong social safety net and strong trust in public institutions and authorities. Because of this Swedes would quickly obey any change in strategy, so they are able to monitor hospital capacity (for instance) and quickly move to lockdown if things start ramping.

Japan is taking a similar stance as Sweden, not in lockdown and their death rate is only 0.7/million.
Well for one Japanese is much cleaner culture. Also if you look at at snapshot of public spaces mask wearing is now close to 80+%. Very high even for Japanese standard. All service providers/workers are now wearing mask inside which is looked down upon even for Japanese culture.

Like I said in the mask thread, mandatory mask > lock down.

Now Japan is trying to lie about this to keep the Olympics, so I would take their numbers with a grain of salt.

QFT. If you check the countries that are recovering such as Singapore for example, it’s because of high compliance with the government.

One of the biggest curveballs of the article is this

The culture is already engrained there vs. what we’re doing here. The fact this thread exists shows why Canada shouldn’t follow Sweden. It’s not engrained in our heads yet.

You can’t compare us to Sweden or Japan because we are culturally different.
Doesn’t Sweden rank consistently in the top developed countries for STD prevalence?

Somehow the country that can’t figure out condom use doesn’t strike me as a shining example of those “respectful of public health advice and guidelines”.

I don’t really think the country specific cultural factors are the main consideration issue here.

Too many evil hamsters. I will bet a bag of yummy cheetos that hamsters played a part in the outbreak.

Is it? That I didn't know.

If their 'no restrictions' does work in the long run, then I'd be wrong and I'd like to be proven wrong by it. Only time will tell.

Stankiness is just assertation of dominance. Since in Canada, Sweden and China you can't just run around pointing guns at people - you might as well assert with your odours.

But that said: The game changes forever after Covid-19, stankiness will probably be fully shunned. I'm going to have to buy a big bottle of Brut.

Weird that those swedes take the time to dye their roots dark. I'm calling #fakenews on that one bud.

    https://toronto.citynews.ca/2020/04/...-premier-ford/

Ontario premier Doug Ford told CityNews that the province will run out of the crucial protective equipment in a week after the U.S. stopped a massive shipment of masks from crossing the border on Sunday.

In a one-on-one interview with CityNews reporter Cynthia Mulligan on Monday morning, Ford said that the shipment stopped at President Donald Trump’s order contained three million masks.

Ford added that he doesn’t know if the province will be able to get new masks before the current stock runs out.

Japan is to impose a state of emergency in Tokyo and six other prefectures as early as Tuesday to contain the coronavirus, while the government prepares a $990 billion stimulus package to soften the economic blow.

They really didn't act until IOC say see ya next year.

So the action and reported numbers seems to disconnect.

Just like China sealing Wuhan in when death numbers was so low.

I wonder if this has changed any Canadian's opinion of Trump, from the outright fanboy base.
