Only 1500? Not a lot considering.

1,500 layoffs just announced at Suncor.
    Thanks Danielle!

But seriously, imagine this happening a few days after the NDP had won.

Suncor has been warning about the layoffs since last year. This is not a surprise.

Not really. The only thing announced previously was a 20% cut to contractors last year. New CEO has only been in place for 2 months. This a new round on top of the 20% contractor cut.

Although writing has been on the wall during his interviews around cutting costs. So yeah I guess it isn’t entirely surprising for employees or people in the know.

Shame there is next to no skill transfer between whatever it is Suncor does and the rest of Calgary O&G lol

But hey, they have their pronouns on their email signatures so that must count for something?

    Maybe the city is hiring?

My co-op terms were at Petro-Canada. I did not request a full time position there after graduation, and one was not offered.

Lol perfect example Suncor... Old guy "retire' in 2019 at Imperial, and then becomes CEO at Suncor now.

Hey, he's got the know how! He's done it before! We need someone with experience! (Old people wisdom)

I was there for a 20% cut several years ago at Su.

Yeah I thought they've been bleating about this for a couple of years now, with the contractor cuts just being the start. I think the previous CEO just stopped giving a fuck after covid.

Sounds horrible but 1500 out of 30K employees isn't all that bad. Probably PC gas station employees.

gas station employees aren’t employed /contracted by Suncor

But the 1500 number is apparently across staff and contractors so if it is actually 30k total then yeah it’s about 5% which isn’t too bad.

Staff was around 16,500 as of last year according to this but no indication on # of contractors.

The 1,500 is entirely from non-field staff, no one from the plant level. So it’s much more aggressive than what some of your numbers are.
