If OP takes on the person in a small claims court. Wins, but does not get a dime as the defendant has no moola.
Could OP sell that debit owing to collections/Bailiffs..?

it's amazing how few people have a back bone when it comes to holding people accountable. I think the op should make a point and file the small claims. It's simple and easy and he will win. It's a minor expense on his end.

It will accomplish what hes hoping for.
    In theory, I agree.

The reality is that he will waste lots of his time and money for literally nothing in return, and never see a single penny from this deadbeat. Not worth it IMO - he's the only one that loses in that scenario.

People keep saying "make a point" or "Teach him a lesson". Again, what is that point or lesson that he is not already getting?

no, Liability is only to cover the other parties when you're at fault, fire and theft is part of comprehensive, which is not to be confused with collision.
unless it has changed in the last 12ish years since the last time I DIDN'T have full coverage on my vehicles when I got PLPD, fire and theft coverage was bundled with it every time automatically unless i specifically said no to it. It was such a small amount, at least at the time, it made no meaningful difference to my monthly premiums.

Kinda like now with my new vehicles that I am buying. @Masked_bandit automatically adds a rider to my policy that says if my truck is written off in the first 30,000kms (IIRC), insurance pays out for the purchase price to buy a new truck. I *COULD* opt out of that, but it makes very little difference in my monthly premiums and is silly not to have it.

You can also have fire and theft coverage on a vehicle that is parked on your property and doesn't hit public streets, like a race car, or even your car in storage...

Isn't that "comprehensive" coverage you are talking about? It's not super expensive, but it's for sure not a part of "basic" coverage. Unless I'm totally misunderstanding you.

no, it is not part of PLPD, but a separate rider, but it is so cheap, it got bundled with PLPD every time I got a new policy.

I hate to do this to you friend buuuuuut...

Auto insurnace has three distinct sections of coverage. The only one that's mandatory is liability which is often refered to as "PLPD" which stands for Personal Liability & Property Damage. The only thing in this coverage for damage you do to someone else (damage you are LIABLE) for. Theft is separate and optional and comes with either Specified Perils or more commonly Comprehensive. Comprehensive is stuff like theft, fire, hail, vandalism, etc., essentially all the stuff that can damage your vehicle OTHER than an accident. Then of course the last section is Collision which deals with accidents and hit & run situations.

Theft coverage has never been a part of liability / PLPD / one way / basic coverage. A LOT of people leave it off and just stick with liability only when we're talking about low value vehicles.

The minimal amount theft/comprehensive (-glass) adds to an insurance policy, it's worth it over and over.

If... Police found your stolen car in a parking lot abandoned... You're still looking at a 3-400$ tow & impound. I remember a lot that ran 7-800$ because meth heads would run from cops into crazy places , if it's held for forensics - inside secure storage + multiple lot moves, 2000+.

There was a really nice AMG we held for 6+ months got shuttled to 2 different RCMP station, 2 dealers and always in secure storage always escorted moves to maintain chain of custody... That was a 5figure tow/impound bill.

I don't think you did anything to me, I think you just said the same thing I did. It's not part of PLPD, but a separate rider that was always referred to as fire and theft. When I bought a shit box, i got the basic PLPD coverage, and the agent always added the "fire and theft" coverage as well because the cost increase was so negligible to my monthly premiums.

Speedog and spikers- what is your issue? I asked simple advice which you offered nothing but your opinion and I kindly respected and moved on.

I don't have a problem. But you keep justifying your actions with "teach him a lesson" like you are doing him a favor. I am genuinely curious, what lesson are you trying to teach him that he is currently not being taught by the legal system? To be completely transparent, to me, it sounds like you think there is gonna be some kind of payday at the end of this and you think this could be an easy buck, when clearly that won't be the case as most people in this thread have pointed out.

So again, what is this lesson you are trying to teach here?

everyone in this thread makes the assumption that the op will never see a dime if he sues. That's a major assumption. If he sues and the criminal shits his pants for a few weeks then I'd say that's worth it for a bit.

When I sued a guy in small claims the best moment was serving him papers at his home and seeing the shock on his face. That alone was worth it IMO.

Sure, that could be satisfying. but again, what is the lesson? All I see when I read this is Scrooge McDuck dreaming of swimming in the coins of his money vault, while justifying his greed with the term "Teach him a lesson". Now, don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with suing the guy, but as already pointed out, chances of collecting are slim. But again, what is the lesson that is trying to be imparted on mr. criminal here?
