    Default Legal advice- vehicle theft

Just wondering if anyone knows of a resource for cheap/free/reasonable legal advice for victims of crime?

Coles notes..... and I wont elaborate any further so please don't ask is my car was stolen for a 24 hour period and the guy was arrested and admitted to the crime. There was minimal damage, stolen contents, some cleaning and a massive tow bill which I would like to be compensated for.

I am looking for some advice on restitution and or suing the individual. Understand the chances of actually getting paid are low but want to try and also cause him some pain with the process.

Any advice would be great, I plan to manage everything on my own and obviously invest as little as possible.

    Thanks,

Police station might be able to provide advice. Like walk in and chat with the officer on duty. Do you at least have a copy of the police report, charges etc?

No advice but also ask for any work time you had to take or any other transportation you used during the 24hr

Ya chatted with the arresting officer and plan to again- he wasn't super knowledgeable about the process but did guide me to Victim Assistance Support Team who have been helpful but will not comment on any legal advice. I have a running tally of the costs going including lost wages due to dealing with the issue.

You'll probably need a real lawyer involved somehow. But maybe there's some kind of pro-bono legal assistance you can access? If you were a student I'd suggest student legal aid.
Check this website. It seems like your income will be tested to verify that you qualify for free or reduced rates. https://www.lawcentralalberta.ca/en/...come-albertans

Failing that, you may have to actually pay a lawyer real money to accomplish your goals.

On the other side, you should figure out of there is any chance in hell of actually recovering money from this dirtbag, or if your just going to waste his time. Maybe you are okay with both, but you should at least have a realistic expectation.

the way it sounds, and lack of details, my money says its someone he knows and wants to teach them a lesson in respect rather than actually recover financially.

Do you know any motorcycle enthusiasts? Might be more effective in teaching them a lesson.

Nah its nobody I actually know. I just dont want to share all the details on the internet or open any debate online. I am not opposed to hiring an actual lawyer but know my chances of actually recovering with or without a lawyer are likely low so trying to not throw any more money than is absolutely necessary but still hoping to manage the process as best as possible.

if its actual financial reasons, i would say its not worth your time or effort, car thieves arent typically known for paying debts or being financially responsible.

It sounds like you understand the situation well. If it's not worth spending a few hundred bucks to annoy him, maybe you should spend $20 on a ticket to frozen2 and just ***Let it go***

Ya The chances of getting any money are very low but it might teach a lesson. I believe there could be an impact on future wages, vehicle registration, license, and other hassles for the culprit if I was successful. That’s more the end goal, if I see $ that would be a bonus.

small claims court. Sounds pretty straight forward if you ask me. Go and file, represent yourself and get it all started. The process is surprisingly simple.

The Victims assistance team will be able to guide you through the process of applying for victims assistance and seeking restitution through the trial. It won't be a quick process. It will take months to go to trial especially if the accused is playing games. He/she will likely whine and cry about being some hard-done-by addict and if you have a poofter for a judge the whole thing will get tossed since the courts view a stolen vehicle about the same as a stolen chocolate bar. The accused if found guilty will likely get "time served" and will walk out the door into the parking lot at the same time you are!
could he not sue in small claims?

when i used victims assistance when i was young, someone smashed my window and stole my stereo, the stereo was recovered at a pawn shop but i went through victims assistance to repair my window, i believe it has zero impact on the offender and is just paid out of a social assistance fund.

I'm sure he could. If it's your typical car thief, how do you collect money from someone who's life is circling the drain? IMO I'd just take the insurance money and move on.
No insurance. The culprit isn’t a car thief of the typical sort- I do know that much. My understanding is there is no past record etc.
