    Default Nextdoor (app)

Anyone else using this? It's basically social media for your neighbourhood and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Pretty interesting concept and I can see it being valuable once you get to a critical mass of people signed up. Could be really good for things like organizing community events, sharing tool rentals (aerator, log splitters etc), local niche skills, buy and sell because you know you are talking to someone in close proximity.

I'm linked up to the NW neighbourhoods and they are starting to have a lot of users and posts but curious how other areas of the city are.

I suspect this will become like the community Facebook groups. Full of bickering and judgemental busybodies.

Or maybe there's an upside I'm not seeing. Do you get to see how active your community is before you join?

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

Can this also be used for hooking up with neighbors? Lonely stay at home moms

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

I'm signed up with it for Mahogany. I don't have facebook so don't really have anything to compare it to but it seems ok. Looks like a decent way to get in touch with neighbours if you need to and be kept aware of any community events. I haven't noticed too much complaining yet.

Nothing good comes from MORE social media.

I got an invite for my neighborhoods in the mail last week (lol), right in the recycling.

The "Westside moms and dads" group isn't too bad. I can't speak for other neighborhoods. Like most facebook groups, there are a lot of stupid questions or people who are lazy and don't do research.

I support any alternative to Facebook, though if this is like most other neighborhood groups it will be dominated by a couple busybody Karens which ruins it for everyone else.

Only until they get to meet dj_rice and have their time occupied.

Unless you have some kind of admin/moderator/etc setup it'll just end up being a bunch of spammy garbage. Every Karen advertising their essential oils and every Chad trying to spam his get rich quick scheme

I’m in a a messenger group with a dozen or so houses down my street. Like actual neighbours I can see from my yard. I don’t care to meet somebody 5 blocks away.

There is. I was the first one to sign up for my neighbourhood so once it got to 10 users it officially "launched" our area and it defaulted to me and the next two users who signed up after me as the admins. I've removed a couple of posts offering Arbonne MLM crap, and someone else removed another spammy post so it has the capability.

I had this crazy idea to talk to my neighbours by actually going up up to them and introducing myself.

Any time you need to talk to them or update them though (i.e. a prowler in the area or something), would you rather fire off a quick text which reaches them all at once or go door-to-door telling all of them? I guess that's the difference. Presumably the people participating in this already have met in person and this is just a convenient way to give/receive updates, share concerns, etc.

Neighbourhood groups are the worst... even something like our local cottage group at the lake, like everyone knows everyone (most for a few generations) but once they get on social media.... my lord, 1/50 posts are useful the rest are ridiculous like “that wakeboard boat got too close to my line of sight! Boats should be banned! Canoes for allllll!!!”

    Exactly this.
The Auburn Bay group is an absolute shit show.
I'd rather stay oblivious to the fact a large number in the community are whiny little bitches.

Aside from it essentially being an email list of people I went to high school with, I could take it or leave it.

I get nothing out of social media.
