Always been fascinated by the need for people who went to Sait or MRC to justify how great the institution is.

You can sink in a Canadian public school?

I thought high diplomas were a human right or something now.
In her school (catholic) in grade 8 - absolutely. Teachers have no issues handing out zeros.
However, many parents choose to complain if their kid gets a low grade. I think that's the main issue.

Main thing I try to reinforce with her is accountability (and being proactive, ie: if you don't understand something ask), and being organized and getting her work done (ie: I didn't know it was due is not a valid excuse). Tracking due dates with the online D2L systems is a nightmare (5 degrees between my wife and I and it confuses the hell out of us also lol), so I helped her to come up with some ideas to track due dates that works for her. Some of these lessons will pay more dividends in life than the 'academic' components. Knowing how to learn, how to research/study, and not making it someone else's problem.

It's funny, I started at MRC and then transferred to UofC. I did not like MRC one bit, felt like a bad high school to me. On the other hand, I really enjoyed UofC. It's hard t say why, but I felt a connection to the school for some reason that I did not feel at MRC

Something to consider when picking a school, it's not all about the "startest" students for employers in the future when hiring.
Interesting research, and confirms my point of view when hiring. I would rather hire an interesting person that is bright and shows enthusiasm for the job, vs pure academics.
Something intangible; the 'think on your feet' factor that is sometimes missing with the latter.

I think the most interesting part of it was how everyone in HR said they had NO BIAS when hiring but then the University they graduated from seemed to always have more grads hired from that University.

If i remember it was the most common with UofC but they seemed to not like their institution as much as the others, I remember we really tried to have the questionnaire the way we had it to see this basically. But students from MRU were happier with the education they received since it was much smaller classes.

And SAIT was as expected, people went to SAIT because they knew exactly what they wanted to do, whereas UofC and MRU were much more finishing HS and going straight to Uni

Yah I think it's more the small class "hands on" vs the textbook approach to learning.
Everyone is different though, the question should be not if parents are happy with their children's learning but more if the children are happy with learning and want to learn.

I don't think either are wrong, In every section a student interviewed one of the reps at their office. I remember I interviewed someone at Encana, we had it recorded and then the other students would review it to remove bias, everyone asked the same questions to remove bias.

It was prob one of the most interesting things I did at MRU and just not something I could see being done at UofC, I enjoyed doing it though found it super interesting, even though I learned to hate everything about marketing and never did look for a job in it afterwards.

Elon Musk explains it pretty well here as well not sure if it's in this video but he is creating a school for his kids no Grades (1-12) and your learning what interests you, I agree with this 100%

EDIT: Download Link below for the powerpoint, if it's not allowed please remove it.

Anyone have opinions of FFCA vs Catholic / Public system. We are on the list for FFCA for our oldest that starts school this fall but having some second thoughts.

Any parents with their kids in FFCA? Is it really 15mins of homework even in kindergarten?

Ours is in TLC kindergarten (CBE version of FFCA), and they said the same thing. It's pretty much 15 minutes or less for he first 4 months.

Monday - write lower case letter a dozen times
Tuesday - draw a picture of something that starts with that letter
Wednesday - upper case letter a dozen times
Thursday- draw a picture of something that starts with that letter

Now it's the same, but after they draw the picture, they write a sentence about it using the letters they can identify by sound. So not expected to be spelt correctly at all, just the letters they can identify.

This takes at 15 min. of infuriating patience, depending on how long of a sentence they want to write.

I don’t think it matters as much as long as the parents take a very active role in the kids life. My plan is to be a stay at home dad so definitely public. Kid is gonna have to work for everything just like I did. I’m gonna pretend to be poor lol maybe even pretend to not speak English just to see what my parents went through.

On FB right now there is a conversation in the aspen group about where a new catholic high school is going to go which is currently slated for 14th Ave and 93rd st sw which is the same street that two private schools are on - Webber and Calgary Academy. I can’t imagine another school going in there it would be a catastrophic mess in the morning.

I was paraphrasing. It was the westside group that includes all people from that area.

I would've gone to Mount Royal if they were an accredited university during my day. They had, from what I could tell, a better program for PR and marketing, whereas Haskayne didn't give a fuck about you if you weren't in accounting, finance or PLM.

All I know is that U of C CS grads are totally useless. For fuck's sake at least know how to compile a program. Or even write a program that's compilable.

There was a thread on /r/alberta a couple of days ago about how the education ministry has no funding for schools to learn the new curriculum. I suggested that they use their numerous PD days to do this. I got flamed like I was some kind of monster.

Why would teachers do that on their Professional Drinking days?

Yea. That funding is earmarked for David Suzuki indoctrination sessions.
