I'd rather get a replica of what that watch is essentially trying to copy anyways

Please do not buy replica watches. The factories are often run by organized crime, with substandard labour conditions, material sourcing, etc.

Chances are very high that when you buy a replica, you are directly supporting organized crime.

Please do not ever buy a replica watch.

I would never have known what it was trying to emulate (I'm just not watch-y enough I suppose) but I definitely wouldn't buy a replica watch in the same way I wouldn't be a knock-off Lamborghini. It just doesn't make sense to me.

    Interesting, didn't know about that.

Slightly unrelated but what are your thoughts on homage watches? Seems like few watch enthusiasts gets riled up by them.

Homages are fine as far as I'm concerned, but remember you're talking to a guy who gets his rocks off talking about Timex Weekenders and Seiko 5's lol.

The watch snobbery is hilarious and also killing the industry. They don't realize that they alienate people and the industry dies a slow death. Look at the total lack of Baselworld, for example.

Does anyone have experience with LIV watches? When you catch a sale, they can be priced decently.. "swiss made". They have watches in the $600.00 - $1500 USD range. The online reviews seem good but Ive noticed the Japanese movement watches are getting a lot better and Im wondering if I can get something better.

I've got two in my watch box. They're good watches for the money. Under $600 USD and you can get a 10% off coupon very easily.

RE: comparing to Japanese movements, the higher end ones are definitely comparable and usually less expensive, too.

LIV watches are actually made in Switzerland, use a Swiss movement, and have sandwhich dials (which is somewhat unique at this price point). I think it comes down to style.

I'm a big fan of Hamilton watches, particularly their Khaki Field line for everyday wear and their American Classics for dressier watches.

This. Not to mention it's totally tacky. Only wannabe's wear replicas/fakes.

I see authentic watches site posted above and not sure if anyone is planning on using it, but I recently purchased a two tone Breitling Superocean from there which got tacked with almost $600 in customs. After the conversion etc, locally buying it the difference was maybe a grand but after the taxes it ended up only being $400-$500 difference. Had I known, I would have just bought it locally at an AD instead.

I can barely afford a $600 watch let alone $600 in duty.

    Yea I'm jealous.

Beware to buy from US site ..shipping, duty, tax, handling fee could be expensive... $500 US could be ~$800

By the way, this looks promising!

Swiss made, full in house movement, nice metal case, great looking for just $300!!

We've got a bit of VOSTOK on the site and they're good value for money, but it's been a few years since I've had one in my hands. I can't speak to how they are now, though I'd be willing to give it a run through if one came my way.

These watches can't be easily serviced and are effectively disposable. That may not bother some people, but I find it distasteful. There are other watches of similar capability/quality/aesthetics from other brands, including micros, that can have the case cracked open and serviced.

That whole disposable aspect is an immediate turnoff, even on a low price unit.

    Thank you for this!

I dont like to read reviews posted on the manufacturers sites as they are usually heavily filtered but I trust your input!

It sounds like it would be a daily watch for you, Seiko or Hamilton those big brands would be your safe bet...

I quite like the idea of Swatch, simple, toyish, wear it once every few months... I bet my 25 year old Swatch is still working!

Hamilton/Tissot are also among my favs, but at the lower tier, you don't get multi-layered dials and all that fun stuff.

That said, I've got four Hamiltons.

now that I'm getting older and am more about function than form... no issues from me to wear anything from Orient, Seiko 7s26, or a ETA lower tier brand or swiss watch with 2892/2824 based movement

Value for dollar, CYMA and Mido's offer very nice looking automatic watches

that said, I'm kinda done with fancy automatic calibers and smart watches... I'm thinking of just a half decent tough Quartz watch with a sapphire crystal, good waterproofing and a rubber or nato band.

After a while you just realize that all you need to do is tell time.

The Hamilton Khaki is very nice looking... but is there a field watch that maybe is even more shock resistant? (I don't like luminox... I've had tritium tubes fall off).

I'm kind of in the same camp now, going a bit full circle on the watch thing. A few of the microbrands have some cool pieces, Look up, Dan Henry for a neat quartz based watch.

Certina, Christopher Ward, Alpina, Ball all seem like good options on sale, grey Market, or used.
