Switching From Shaw to TekSavvy - which modem?

Making the switch from Shaw 300 to TS 300 since it's $50/mo cheaper with no apparent change in speed or downside.

I want to buy my own model. TS has a few options and I have no idea which is best.

I have the TC4400 through Lightspeed @300 and it seems to work well enough. I think it's a year or year and a half old now and no complaints.

I think Lightspeed is 10$ less than teksavvy if you wanna consider them. It's basically the same shit, Shaw installer comes out and uses Shaw's last mile

Get the TC4400 if you already have a router.
Or the SR808ac if you just want plug and play solution.

The TC4350 has higher latency and is not worth the cost saving. Here is some test results comparing the two.

I want a solid connection. My PC will be hardwired, all other devices via Wifi. Would it make more sense to buy a non-wifi modem and then grab a wifi router?

Service is not the same. Its a 3rd party so if there are issues it could take longer for resolution

Although not on the list, I have an old DCM475 on Teksavvy that has been working for several years. Physical support is very hard to come by, but more often than not if there is a local loop issue, they have to repair the whole loop - meaning just go to a neighbor with Shaw and see if they are having problems and have them call it in.

If you can diagnose a squirrel chewing on your line from the loop, then you will probably be just fine.

DCM475 is only up to 60meg yeah. It used to be offered for 100meg services but it had a lot of issues maintaining speeds so they now force you to upgrade modems for anything higher than 60

There are more problems as well and yea, takes way too long to fix. My parents went from Shaw to Teksavvy to save money, and went from pretty much 0 outages to 1 or 2 a year with 3-7 day downtime per incident.

They get pissed because their pirate TV box stops working and have no TV.

Nope, just the bargain basement $24, but they did push me up to 25mbits down/5 mbits up for free recently. I think entirely because that is the new absolute minimum that the Cable modems want to provision nowadays, or maybe they just wanted to give a deal for the grandfathered accounts. I can live within 400GB because I automate pr0n downloads to 2 to 8AM in the morning. Steam can also be set to only download during certain hours, easy peasy.

I've had two "major outages" in the last four years or so, one because the guy working on the box opened it up and let snow melted water rush in, lol (approx. 8 hour fix) and one other 12 hour fix that also knocked out the entire block.

BTW: On the first day I got the DCM 475, it shipped with clip on rubber feet not attached, in a separate bag that were too small. Lol, terrible first impression but ended up being just fine.

I've been with lightspeed for 5 years now and I think I've only had one outage for around 5 hours but if I remember right it was actually a larger shaw outage or something. Aside from that I reboot my router once every 6 months because it seems to just get a bit slow. Might just be a shitty router.

Otherwise I just pay my bill and it works typically

Either which way, I have 150/150 with Telus and pay 60 a month, and have been for the last 3 years. It always speed tests to 175/175 which is nice.

If you are in an area where telus can't do FTTH for some reason, which is apparently several parts of the city, then Shaw, I guess.

That's how cable is, has nothing to do with them but how the channels are provisioned. Shaw is 300/20 as well

This also has to do with the fact Shaw is more "shared" and each person on a nice can affect others where this doesn't happen with Telus

So funny enough after posting I haven't had any issues in forever ... internet has been shit all day but looking online it appears to be a Shaw issue affecting most of Calgary

Calling Vmedia and/or Lightspeed tomorrow. Any downside to switching besides the obvious of buying a modem?

Done with Shaw unless they offer up an insane deal.
