    Had GDL for ages because I thought the program was just a huge cash grab. Got rid of it by temporarily swapping my license to a BC one while I was there for work.

    I'm still GDL 15 years after I got my license. Why would I pay for something that is so obviously a cash grab and has absolutely zero bearing on my life. I call that smart.
    If you limit your life in AB, that attitude is fine.

    How are car rentals with GDL?

    My GF has GDL still and no other country has ever checked or cared - can't speak for Canadian rentals though.

    Yeah I guess if you move out of province, that might affect you. No plans to do that
    Renting has no affect on you outside of Alberta so who cares.

    But if they are planning to remove GDL, I wonder if the compromise was that officers can legally do alcohol blow test? Maybe that was the train of thought?

    I rented cars all over Canada no problem.
    See my cousin's Ontario move story and insurance implication.

    Rental doesn't care.

    I got rid of GDL a year or so after I got my license, for similar reasons to others (almost ran out of demerits).

    Passed on the first test, wasn't even an issue. GDL wasn't in place when I got my learners, but was when I got my license, so I still had to do the test (circa 2005). Not having to worry about having a beer, and being able to sit with a learners are both pros, and it doubly applies to my class 6, since I can be a "teacher" for a class 5/7 rider, but you can't with a GDL.

    The change to the impaired law was federal, GDL licensing is provincial, no connection to each other

    I exchanged my non canadian license for a drivers license here in 2010. I still had to take the driving test, I couldnt believe how easy it was. So if you have a class 5 gdl does you license say that?

    While driving with a Class 5-GDL licence, the following rules apply:

    you cannot drive with more people than there are seat belts in your vehicle
    a GDL licence will be suspended at 8 demerit points
    blood alcohol level of the driver must be 0%
    Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 licence upgrades are not allowed
    a GDL driver cannot be the accompanying driver to a learner

    I think this rule about the BAC limit would be a deal breaker for me to upgrade if I was in that situation. The seat belt thing is wierd too, cant imagine that you are allowed to take 6+ people in your 5 seater car depending on your license type.

    I never understood that, because seatbelts are mandatory anyways.

    I figured it was a clause to prevent GDLs from driving classic cars grandfathered without seatbelts?

    It's mandatory to use all the seatbelts properly in the car. If you have more people than seatbelts then it's okay for one person to not wear a seatbelt. It's also illegal for two people to share a seatbelt, which you'd think might be safer than one person without one....

    wat?

    Then what is this $155 fine then?

    Or that rule only means you can't drive one of those small shuttle buses that class 5 qualifies for?

    Did the exact same. Moved to Vancouver, they gave me a full class 5, then moved back to Alberta a few years later and still a full class 5.

    These are the conditions that allow you not to have to wear a seatbelt:

    (a) motor vehicles that were not designed or equipped with seat belt assemblies by their manufacturers;
    (b) motor vehicles while they are driven in reverse;
    (c) motor vehicles when they are used in the course of making deliveries or picking up items, while they are driven at a speed of not more than 40 kilometres per hour;
    (d) motor vehicles while they are driven in a parade authorized by a municipality.

    It's from 84(1) of the regs - http://www.qp.alberta.ca/documents/Regs/2009_122.pdf

    So just drive in reverse or keep it under 40 and say you're making pickups/deliveries.

    Hmm ... I'm starting to think my drivers training person lied to us about seat belts.

    Maybe this is the real reason no one in my area goes above 40, they are just too lazy to do up their seatbelts.
