What are the specifics of your new plan? If I can avoid retention's on the phone I'd take something for $120/month.
Just Internet 300 and Bluecurve Total TV. All new hardware free rental. I didnt try to fight for extras like Crave/HBO and etc. I just wanted lower monthly and the new equipment.

For those of you with shaw bluecurve is it any good? I have shaw 300 right now and it's garbage. Speeds very inconsistent and drops down under 100 many times when I check with my hard wired pc that's connected directly to their modem and wireless always drops even when using a different access point and 5ghz is marginally better than 2.4. This problem is happening at two houses. I called a few times and complained and nothing has changed but I don't have a bluecurve modem and they suggested to replace it but costs extra per month. I had telus 75 before and it's a hundred times better than shaw right now so I might change back.
Blue curve is just marketing speak for their latest shitty gateway system.

    Use your own router.

Well if they can't fix it, you should move on.

Are you in a dense neighborhood?

We have bluesky/bluecurve and get very consistent 600Mbps+, never drops below 600 even during primetime.

That said, the Shaw router is in bridged mode, so just being a modem. Router and Wifi is separate good quality gear.

Will try that. But I didn't think this would help because I am getting under 100 a lot of times when wired directly to their modem.

I was waiting for our free credit to run out and now we just started paying so hopefully it can be fixed or I will move. Neighborhood is Hamptons and Panorama Hills, not sure how to find out density.

Yea not surprising, by bridging and using your own router you take away the need for the Shaw one to do any heavy lifting and be the bottleneck.

That said; if you are never able to realize the speeds you are paying for that is reason to bring Shaw out for a service call as you might have too much noise in your system or something that they need to address.

I ues shaw with my own unifi gear and am very happy now using 600. I like the tv boxes as well with the voice search to make the on demand much easier to use with crave/netflix etc.

Posted this in another thread about Telus vs Shaw a couple months ago:

Telus will have better pricing if you have FTTH.
These are plans I have been able to get within the last year.

    My home:
    Telus 750/750 with unlimited - $40/month
Optik TV with 15 theme packs and 3 boxes (1 pvr) - $65/month
Also got a $200 initial credit. Discounts are good till end of 2021 but it's not on a term.

    Parents:
    Shaw 600/20 - $55/month
Bluesky Small TV with some Asian channels and 2 boxes (1 pvr) - $55/month
This is a 2 year bundle so it's on a 2 year term.

    Aunts:
Telus 75/15 (all copper, fastest available) - $45/month
    Essential TV pick 6 with 3 boxes (1 pvr) - $45/month
This was also a 2 year term discount. She was paying $80/month for internet 15 only before I called in.

My parents and my aunt live in the same community maybe 7 blocks from each other but because of the infrastructure my aunt has limited choices for service and plans.

Do you use bridge mode with Shaw TV? I havent figured out a way to do that yet.

TV is separate from the internet. Coax comes in, splits, one goes to the main TV box, one, to the second tv slave box, one to the cable modem.

Ahh you have a wired TV setup then. Shaw gave me wireliness set-top boxes which only works with their gateway which I guess doubles as the modem as well. Maybe i'll ask to get the wired boxes.

I am curious, there are some pretty die hard Shaw customers here - if TELUS FTTH was available in your hood, would you go over the the light side?

I've been with Shaw for ~20+ years (since whenever the very first cable/highspeed internet was offered) and I just moved to an area with FTTH. Telus is coming on the weekend for a site survey and next week for the install. Once it's up and running properly I will cancel Shaw and gladly pay whatever penalty is left on my contract. As good as Shaw has been to me, they can't compete with symmetrical gigabit.

I think there was something with them having run out of wired boxes.

    100%

I've been a Shaw person since they rolled out cable internet years ago. In fact I used to have the "foot warmer" modem as I would call it because it was huge, hot and heavy.

FTTH is just a more stable and reliable connection with consistent speeds compared to Shaw.

We were with Shaw at my parents since mid/late 90's high-speed and was with Shaw when I lived downtown.

I've been with Telus for a couple years now with FTTH and don't think I would ever go back to Shaw. Better rates and I personally think Optik TV is better than Shaw's older gateway and Bluesky.

Edit: Telus Internet connection has also been flawless for me.

I believe they were installing FTTH in my community but they must be doing it in phases as last year, they were digging up all the houses at the end of the block and behind me but didn't touch my street. I don't think I'll be using Telus so should I say no when they come to ask if they can install? I don't want them digging up my drive-way and wrecking my lawn. Would saying no, be a bad thing for property value?

In today's world and in the future, 2 identical homes one with FTTH and one without - I'd buy the FTTH home first every time. They've successfully pushed 1 petabit per second in a single wavelength down a fiber, cable will never approach that unless Shaw pushes fiber out to more active nodes in communities in order to shorten their cable drop to the home.

I've got to believe the people shopping for homes based on FTTH availability is almost zero. Maybe if everything else was identical, and that was the last remaining differentiation, but I can't believe people would prioritize that above almost everything else. I wouldn't worry about it. When we were house shopping, I didn't even think of that and it never came up in any advertisements, open houses, literature, conversations with realtors, etc. Most new homes don't even have Ethernet in every room because "everything is wireless these days".

Funny enough, although wasn't a deciding factor for me, when I saw the fiber combo cable in my house when I moved in almost 11 years ago, I almost creamed my pants haha. The house I ended up buying was perfect, and fiber was just the cherry on top of the cake Depending on a person, it could be a pretty big factor, but I don't think it would be a deciding one. Mind you my fiber in the basement wasn't active until about 8 years ago, but once Telus got fiber to the hood they hooked me up almost right away. I saw them running fiber in the area and one day coming back from home saw the truck parked right in front of my house with the guy doing something in the box, asked him if it was fiber and he said yes, and a week later I had it. Pretty sure I was like the first person on the block with it. I would never go back, seriously, in this whole time, I don't even remember a time I ever had to touch anything, it just works. Been with Shaw for many years before that and had to reboot the damn modem weekly sometimes, was stupid. When Shaw cut out on my wife mid online quiz....it's fate was sealed. Since then my wife finished her LPN on Telus, and doing her RN online now, all on Telus, with many courses and quizes done online.
