    Default Sony Camera Bodies Recommendation

    Hai Friends.

To justify the PD cf tripod kickstarter purchase that I had forgotten about, I dropped some G's on some G-Masters and am now debating on the bodies. I cannot decide between FF and APS-C because it doesn't make much of a diff for an amateur like me. Pros only shoot FF, amirite? *wink*

A7iii does not seem to be an improvement over A6600 for the extra cost. However, I don't want to be wasting the GM lens on a crop and my hands are a bit too big for the A6600.

The A7iii price point is close to the A7RIII territory because more megapixels, and lack of a low pass filter, compensates for erectile dysfunction. Which subsequently brings me somewhere in the A7RIV price point because more megapixels, 5.5 axis IBIS, and Eye-AF in video. A9 is just a bit more, but that's too crazy for me.

I primarily shoot cats if that is helpful information.

which GM lenses did you get?

Get the R if you care for mega-pickels, the R2 is still actually pretty decent just the AF is behind the 3 or R3.

Also lower battery life as it is still using the old NP-FW50, whereas the newer gen has moved to the NP-FZ100.
I think the A6600 is using the new battery?

TBH whenever I go back to Sony, I always gravitate to the A7, I've probably gone through 4-5 bodies now

Just the 24 and 85. Although I might keep the 24 and switch the 85 to the cheaper Batis 85. Although the FE is very good, but I want to move into a certain neighborhood and the little blue badge holds a lot of street cred, and I love Zeiss color. I might pick up the 50mm Touit at some point for posting +15 food on my instagram.

A6600 uses the new battery. The old W batteries were pretty crappy in comparison. The A7rIV pixel shift looks fantastic, but the subject and camera needs to be still - and I haven't figured out how to get a cat to stay still without shooting it. It looks like A7iii is the way to go despite being the oldest body.

The A7's have really great AF. Get the R if you care about megapixels, cropping potential or print resolution.

Weight of G lenses is at least the same as pro DSLR lenses. Incredible glass weighs a lot, hard to beat physics

    My suggestion is A7III.

    Thanks.

I started off selling my A7ii and wanting a lighter body A6600 + 24mm f1.8...but one thing lead to another.
Now I am probably going to upgrade my RX100 V to the VII. wtf.

Edit:...actually scratch that last part RX100VII is a disappointment.

With only 2 primes, 24GM and 85GM I would go A7RIII for a couple more $ more than the A7III.
Main benefit with more MP is the cropping capability. You can crop the 24GM to 35mm equivalent and get a 16-20MP image (IIRC), the 85GM can become a 135mm.
Unless you are a hardcore wildlife shooter, you probably will not notice much difference with AF between the 2.

If you go A7RIV then you can crop to 24MP.

I've owned/played with most of the A7 and A7R cameras and TBH, battery life concern is negligible unless you are a pro.

Good points. I do read some pretty harsh reviews on A7Riii autofocus vs a7iii.

I'm waiting for the A7iii to dip below $2000 before I pick one up. The AF on those are a significant leap from the II series, which hilariously enough I could really use for the cat photos I do at the animal shelter

I have no desire at all for any of the R models. Hell, I'd be perfectly happy with the S models if it had better AF. I wish they'd come out with a full frame A6xxx body.

What is the best lens for shooting cats?

What is the difference between A7Riii crop mode and cropping in post?

600mm f4 gm it is then. The extra range should help with my cat allergy.

    You guys are horrible people.

A7III(R) and G master 24-70mm would cover you for awhile based on the focal lengths you mentioned earlier. Or the 24-105mm F4 if you need/want a bit more reach.

crop mode will yield you smaller files as it crops it before saving the file.

you got some really good lens already, just enjoy shooting with them.
maybe get the FE 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.8 as cheap every day lens. or go big and get the 50mm 1.4

Leaning towards A7Riii with the 24 1.5 and 24-105 now. I am more confused than ever. Will roll a 1d20 when I get to the store.

    nice startup lens!

I have a Samyang 35mm f2.8 if you're looking for a small prime travel lens.
