Trick to using the credits is having the airlines still being solvent

It depends on what this is going to look like long term. We were supposed to travel right now and the vacation was booked & paid for in late August 2019. The only thing that hasn't been refunded is the airfare, WJ says only credit that must be used up within one year from the date of the original purchase. At this point, how the fuck am I going to use $4K with WJ between now and the end of August? If they want to tack another year onto that timeline then fine but otherwise give us our money back.
Not the solution you are looking for but you can transfer westjet credits to other individuals ($50 transfer fee) or book tickets for other individuals. This gives you an option of selling the credits off at least.

Just wait until you learn they gave you westjet dollars back. And when you go to book the same trip for the same price later on, the westjet dollars only work for the airfare and not taxes. So you have to shell out more money

Spoke with AC on Friday re our cancelled flight to Europe in May, it was AC that suspended the route for now...Was told that the credit is good for 24 months on that trip/travelers only and if you chose to change the itinerary in any way such as book a different trip to another location or change the name on the itinerary those are all additional costs that we will have to pay whenever you decide to use that credit. If we chose a refund its a $600 cancellation fee PLUS the seats we paid for aren't refundable either.

So if they cancel the flight, would your cc insurance not cover that?

Also called the TD Covid line for travel insurance and was informed that if we are given a credit it will play a role in deciding whether or not their policy will cover it, so in short...no. Also, I paid for 2 tickets with my CC (myself and my mom), if I was to be covered under that policy she would not be getting her ticket refunded as she is not an authorized user on my credit card and shes not a spouse/child, so I would only be getting my portion of the ticket refunded (even tho I paid for both) even I even qualified for the insurance. I left it alone for now and will see how things play out over the next few weeks/months and may just eat the cancellation fee if it really comes down to it. Such a mess.

Wow, that’s pretty brutal... I’m still holding out for my mid-May flight (refund options, highly doubt travelling would be advisable by then)... WJ keeps sending updates bouncing around the return flight, not canceled yet

Wouldn't your mom count as a Travel Companion and therefore be covered as well?
My TD CC says this in their Ts & Cs. I'm allowed up to 2 travel companions under my insurance umbrella if I understand it correctly.

Just double checked the Cardholder Agreement and that is the impression that I am under as well. I am waiting for AC to cancel the remainder of the trip then will try calling again.

UPDATE: I managed to get in touch with someone on the Facebook chat function and they said they're adding another year to the deadline on the credits. They also said (quietly) to check back in a few weeks, there are whispers of allowing affected people to just cash out their credits. Fingers crossed!

My major travelling decisions now are to Costco, Walmart, and Superstore.

Sounds like all provincial parks are now closed too

We just wanted to go for a drive today but I guess that's out of the cards.

Can still walk into fish creek if you can walk from your house. Closed to traffic. And rumour is if people start parking in the communities and walking in they will close it completely
