Makes some good sense from a technology standpoint. Probably 90% of the technical innovation that might transfer to production automobiles is outside the drivetrain anyway. Then, the ICE drivetrain is so well researched and studied that we've reached a point of diminishing return on investment.
Now in terms of marketing value, that's harder to say. However I'd guess that VW wasn't benefiting from the old "race on Sunday, sell on Monday" thing anyway.

VW is still fighting to put the dieselgate scandal behind them.
It would be nice to see some performance electric cars coming out that are affordable. Some of the vw id designs are cool.
