Makes some good sense from a technology standpoint. Probably 90% of the technical innovation that might transfer to production automobiles is outside the drivetrain anyway. Then, the ICE drivetrain is so well researched and studied that we've reached a point of diminishing return on investment.

Now in terms of marketing value, that's harder to say. However I'd guess that VW wasn't benefiting from the old "race on Sunday, sell on Monday" thing anyway.

A mid 3s Model 3 Performance is quite affordable in the world of ICE cars of same spec.

Give it a decade, I'm sure 4s 0-60 vehicles will be the norm.
