Yeah that's fair. I had their glass in some of other cars before and they were either easily chipped and cracked or the glass itself had ripples, so the view was off, that's why I stopped going to them.
Going to Cal-Alta is luck of the draw. If you find one with ripple, they will give you some $ back if you complain hard enough. I never had issue with their glass in the 4 times that I used them. But someone I sent over there got wavy glass on his Hyundai and get got like $100 back just to leave it on. Being Calgary, both knows you'll back for another one in 2 years tops anyway.

A few weeks ago the wife's 2020 MDX needed windshield, Silverhill quoted me $3,000 (not a typo) and straight up told me the vehicle MUST have OEM glass otherwise none of the sensors will ever work. Cal-Alta literally LOL'd when I mentioned that at the counter, said they'd be out of business if that was the case. $450 later, the new glass is better than the OEM that came from the factory (had a few small waves in the corners).
Good for them if they can calibrate the camera. If they can't, back to stealership you go. And the only thing I hate about modern vehicles. All the fricking cameras.

So I have a question about the whole camera calibration thing. Do stealer ships and places like Cal-Alta actually do anything to "calibrate" sensors? I had Subaru change the windshield on my Forester with the Eyesight back in January. As I sat in the waiting area looking into the service area I watched the Subaru employee drive my car into the service bay, a 3rd party glass shop come in to change the windshield in 30 min and the Subaru guy drive the car back outside immediately. I paid $680 which included a $180 calibration fee. At the time I thought nothing of it until last week that I needed a new windshield again.

I called Cal-Alta and a few other glass shops for quotes and they all said that they would need to recalibrate the sensors and quotes ranged from $450-$600 including calibration.

A coworker recommended Aztec Autoglass as he said that they are cheap and mobile so I gave them a call as I like a good deal . They told me that the whole calibration thing is basically BS if your sensors are mounted on the car and do not need to be disconnected. They quoted me $315 and changed the windshield in my garage (would have been $30 cheaper if I would have driven to their shop in Airdrie but I ain't got time for that lol)

The Eyesight on the Subaru works great. Tested it out by driving towards the black bin at a good speed and the car auto braked as normal. So then I had them change the glass on my Tacoma and no sensor issues as well.

So my question is; is the sensor calibration just another BS money grab or what?

Its a money grab. I spoke with a local glass repair guy. He said the calibration gives a printout. If they are not giving you this, they are making it up.
If you change your windshield and do not turn the car on at any point. How does the camera/sensor know its a new glass and needs to be calibrated?

I think of it more like a payment "in case it needs calibrating". Because if they didn't charge you anything and your camera system fucked up, they'd have no reason to do anything.
I'm sure 99 percent of aftermarket glass is totally fine and requires no calibration.

doesn't the sensor, at least often, get mounted to or pressed semi rigidly to the glass in some way.

For camera systems that are very sensitive to alignment the calibration is mostly just that, a realignment so it knows its straight and true.

This. How do you know they stuck it in the right place without testing somehow?

You want your automated braking to happen when there is something in front of you. Not in the oncoming lane next to you on an undivided highway.

    Not rocket appliances.
