Complexities of the healthcare system aside, other major considerations such as an aging population, deployment of care outside of urban centres, bloated administration operations of AHS/AHW and dealing with "black swan" maladies like Covid 19 have huge repercussions on the system. Tackling these problems requires high levels of collaboration and insight across both the public and private sectors. Docs specifically have expertise in health and healthcare delivery so need to be part of the solution. Pulling the rug of funding out from under us because "cuts" undermines the work that a lot of us are doing.
Also just wanted to correct some misinformation in this thread. The AMA is not a union. The vast, vast majority of docs are independent contractors (as opposed to employees). The AMA is a professional association that represents physicians and has collective bargaining authority on our behalf. As a result, we don't have the ability to file labour grievances for example or strike; features that are typical of unions.
