Default Need New Tires for the 4Runner

The DuraTracs have been in use for a long time but I'll be lucky if they last another summer season. When I first got them I needed something suitable for the worst trunk roads and rig lease sites, but now I spent most of my time in the city/highway and very occasionally gravel/rough road. I have a set of Nokian winters so strictly summer and shoulder season usage is needed.

So I'm weighing my options while being aware of trying to save costs. The Kuhmo CRUGEN HT51 looks like a really good option, from both a performance and cost POV. Open to other suggestions here.

One concern I have, probably an unwarranted concern if I'm being honest, is how robust a highway all season tires isn't on anything not pavement. Having bomber tires to something else raising questions internally.

I've had good success with the Michelin Defenders to date. Probably one of the best on highway tires that can get you out of a pickle if required.

I have been very happy with my Cooper Discoverer AT3's. I went with the XLT model, but they have two others that are a little more road friendly, 4S and LT. Got them 25% off at Cdn Tire. Some sizes are snowflake rated, while others are just M+S.

I'm going to second the Michelin Defenders for mainly paved road use, been really happy with mine and like dirtsniffer said somewhat capable on off road situations as well. Put those on my '15 4runner.

This is a pretty common sale.. Probably once a month.. Try waiting for a triangle 30X rewards day.. Get another 12% off the price..

Id go with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 line anyday over the duratracs.. similar price, better trear wear and WAY queiter. The 4S should be just as good in the snow as well.

If the Duratrac did have one con, I'll definitely admit it was noise. I also had E-load tires because I was concerned with puncture resistance. Great wear and very reliable -- snow/ice performance was mediocore at best after one season.

The HT51 is seeming like the best option for me mainly driven by price but nothing is sticking out from reviews to suggest it's a garbage tire at all. In fact everywhere I look people are praising this tire. Plus $630/set shipped to my door from 1010Tires is hard to say no to (and I think there is a $60 mail-in rebate).

That's a good price for sure. Check PMC Tire as well, website is clunky but they usually have good prices and cheap shipping from Quebec.

I had the order sitting in my cart all day and was hoping a local OK Tire would price match. Unfortunately none did and one even pointed out that the price I screenshot'd was incorrect.

So the price went up sometime during the day but was locked-in with the cheaper price from this morning. And $60 rebate seems good. So all in all, $570.

Now to find an installer who isn't $150.

Will report back once I have some miles on them.

How much does can tire charge for mounting/balance? Found KO2s for a decent price, but not sure i want that aggressive anymore... pretty rare that im truly offroading, but does happen

I think it is around 150.. but you do not have to go to canadian tire to have them mounted.. Just pick up the tires and go somewhere else?

Bought these online... hoping I actually get the points as they don’t immediately run your visa.

I also threw some Cooper Discoverer AT3's on my '99. Good tires if you can get a deal on them

The Cooper's do get noisy at highway speeds after they've worn in a bit. I also need to get the rears rebalanced after some heavy loads on the truck. As long as there is something soft to bite into, the at3 is a good traction tire. The Pirelli scorpion was a better tire for ice on my truck.

If you end up ordering online, Country Hills Toyota actually charges less for a mount & balance than Canadian Tire.

Try calling Kyle at Spec-R for a price match, I've had very good service from them.
