Merc figured out how to run leaner without melting the engine. Running leaner dramatically raises combustion temps and melts everything around it, unless you’re able to figure out how to keep it all together. Bonus is better fuel economy, more power per kg of fuel, hotter exhaust means more MGH-H energy harvesting, tons of advantages as long as it doesn’t blow up. They had issues with certain parts at pre season testing that couldn’t handle it, and addressed it before season start. Now they’re bulletproof while running combustion temps 4x higher than a performance street engine. It’s a ridiculous feat of engineering. Their performance gains this year is on the ICE side of things.

This race was a great example of their power. Everyone else loses electric boost approaching top speed on really long straights, and everyone drafts and passes past eau rouge. Nobody came close at the start. Usually the pole sitter gets drafted and passed. Ham and Bottas was slow into Eau Rouge and still pulled away on everyone. Merc not only has more peak power, but way more power under the curve. It’s impossible to sustain that with electric due to the maximum energy per lap limitations.

Doesn't hurt that Hamilton is driving a Mercedes, his tire management is exemplary.

Ceramic composite engines? Thats what billions in tech gets you.

Materials are pretty regulated in F1. Who knows how they did it, probably a combination of combustion chamber designs to spread out hotspots and fuel chemistry. That’s my uneducated speculation anyways.

Also wanted to note that Ferrari with the cheat engine could absolutely beat Mercedes last year if they were anywhere as good strategically. Ferrari was by far the fastest car after the summer break all the way until the technical directives to combat the cheating came out.

Williams are gone from Williams. Zero surprise after the answer she gave last week. Wishy washy statements like that are a clear sign someone is on the way out.

That was more a given once they sold the team from the family.

No party mode = fastest lap in F1 history.

What’s even crazier is that Merc didn’t use a tow, even between drivers. They gapped each other enough, probably internal team agreement, to not use a tow at all because they’re so far ahead to make it fair.

    McLaren 3rd. So fucking proud.

I wonder what the lap times would have been if there was party modes this weekend. Would have been low 18's or maybe 17's?

Sainz had a crazy good lap. Was it a good tow?

Decent tow and on the edge.

Merc is just trolling RBR now after qualifying. It's awesome.

Race to the end with Ham in the back after penalty. You wanna see what reverse grid sprint race looks like in F1 this will be as close as we’ll see hahah.

Stroll, Gasly, or Sainz win today? Hell that might be the podium lol.

Whatever happens, Ferrari is out. I’m satisfied.

edit - Hamilton left the race and going to race control lol.

Edit2 - restart in 10 mins. Hamilton still bitching haha. Karun with a perfect analysis on why this penalty will stand.

I would love to see Stroll come first. Probably my favorite race this season.

This is amazing. Hamilton on his scooter flying down pit lane is hilarious.

One lap away from a McLaren win. Good for gasly poor Albon Hahahha. New Vettel.

So I guess that answers @speedog just have to throw in random variables to make it exciting. Punish the people that pit under SC. Fully free pit stop for those that didn’t. Turn the grid upside down.

It was really nice to see the the celebrations in the paddock at the end of the race, certainly wasn't the usual sterile dental office feel one usually sees at the end of the races. The sport needs some emotion and although it will be questioned for a long time with respect to what led up to this finish, it is still something the sport needed - too bad actual fans couldn't have been there for it, probably would've been a riot breaking out.

Three guys on the podium who truly appeared to appreciate their accomplishment in this race - drink that champagne and enjoy it. So good to see.

What a great race, v entertaining.

This race alone is going to make up 50% of the next drive to survive season. Two Ferrari’s out, ham to the back, last race for Claire, gasly win after getting jerked around by RB, close call for Sainz before departing to another team.

Sad to see Kimi going backwards like that after a great restart.

Too bad Latifi couldn't get that point for Williams proper.

Vettel: "it's probably a blessing that there is no body in the stands."

Jinxed, should have seen it coming: https://twitter.com/wtf1official/sta...25253357686784
