#1 maybe, but it's tough with all the changes they're doing to add excitement and unpredictability. This year's WDC is going to be a huge asterisk. They're looking at doing a reverse grid sprint race for one weekend of the 2 double headers (Austria and British/Germany) to determine grid position for the Sunday race. So yea, I could definitely see #1 happening with all this thrown in.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Everyone will question the validity of this year's WDC no matter who wins.

I'm excited. Reverse grid sprint race qualifying might not be happening tho. Would've liked to see how that plays out. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Oh I thought they were doing Silverstone twice?
Nevertheless, game on!
It's Austria and Silverstone twice. Just named differently. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I'm going to reserve judgement on the reverse grid. It will likely create a much more exciting race but I would be disappointed if it highly influenced or determined the WDC / WCC standings.
With that said it would sure be a riot watching Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen work there way through the field.
Watching them battle with finger boy and Russell in the Williams will be a nice touch.
Well the reverse grid is only for qualifying. Basically replacing qualifying with a short reverse grid sprint race to determine the starting position of the main race. So it'll affect the results as much as problems in qualifying weather it's mechanical, others in the way, timing, etc. Qualifying is never guaranteed, and a reverse sprint race isn't either. But yea, I'd love for them to experiment this year even if it does affect WDC/WCC.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I wonder how they will prevent teams from purposely going slow, to get a better position for the race on Sunday. Like a Mclaren not turning up their engine, to be behind Williams, and then blows by them after the first corner.
If you go slow on Saturday sprint race, you start at the back. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Again, the reverse grid position is to determine the starting position of the SPRINT RACE that replaces qualifying. Sunday’s order is based on the finishing position of the sprint race.
You’d have to purposely tank the results of the previous race to have a chance at starting up front on the Saturday sprint race to get an advantage for the actual starting position of the Sunday points race.

Just so we're clear on the proposal. There are 2 doubleheader races at the same track. Austria, and Silverstone. If we follow the normal qualifying/race format, most likely the 2nd quali/race of the double header would be pretty close to the first weekend. What F1 is proposing is:
Weekend 1 (completely normal format)
Saturday Quali
Sunday Race
Weekend 2 (reverse grid format)
Saturday Sprint Race, starting position based on reverse WDC standings.
Sunday Race, starting position based on Saturday sprint race finishing positions.
To get an advantage on Weekend 2 Sunday, you would have to sacrifice your Sunday race Weekend 1, which is retarded, as that's championship points. You literally need to drive balls out for 30 mins on Weekend 2 Saturday to get a good start on Weekend 2 Sunday. There is no loophole I can think of (aside from purposely tanking more running out of the points Weekend 1 Sunday). Further more, by the time you get to Silverstone, sacrificing Weekend 1 Sunday race will have an even lesser effect, as the Weekend 2 starting order is determined by the WDC standings of the previous 4 races.
I don't see a negative of this experiment. Aside from having enough parts for 30 mins of extra racing risk. I guess if you fuck up Weekend 1 Sunday in a top team, you're essentially rewarded with a Pole Position, rewarding failure and helping close the gap.

Well if you are F1 and want to try something new, now is the time!
Andy Cowell is leaving Merc to seek a new engineering challenge.
I don't think this will have an impact on this year championship. I am sure this will be a major blow for Merc next year.
I just came across this:

Here's hoping for nice weather!!
Man that would be interesting, quick google shows the average high of Montreal in October is 13deg with a low of 6.... Would be a very interesting tire race, Super soft compounds, or even going to inters/wets to keep enough temperature in them. Cant imagine they have a ton a data on cold weather racing. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
