I wonder if Microsoft will release teams for Xbox so I can write off my home theatre.

I can't find a downside to employers filling out a T2200. Someone educate me on that. Does that mean that employers who opt not to provide one are vaginas?

We have the line "we'll look into it" as they are worrying CRA may change the rules last minute.

we have been given official documentation that we MUST be in the office. I actually think they did that to prevent people asking for that T2200 form.

We have been home since March so that ship has long sailed when September ended.

My employer says the whole T2200 program is being reviewed by CRA at the moment, so they are waiting on the outcome of that before they make any decisions on issuing forms to staff. They expect to give us more guidance closer to the end of the year.

I've been given the option of working from home using company equipment. No way I'm potentially rocking any boats by asking for this form.

What kind of stuff were you guys going to claim? I looked into it earlier this year and my employer gave me a form to fill out. I realized stuff I purchases like motorized standing desk, extra monitor, etc. weren't eligible. It's going to be hard to claim stuff like internet, utilities since I would already be paying for that stuff already. I just didn't bother claiming anything.

wife also in a midstream company, she's told her department is going back to the office 2 days a week starting mid November.

myself, our medium O&G company had all staff come back to the office this week
4 days with everyone back in the office, one staff tested positive so this week everyone is back WFH with the plan on returning to the office next week

Rural Juror posted a moneysense link that summarizes it but basically what you said is true, there’s not going to be a lot to be able to write off based on current rules.

However hopefully gov changes rules and adds new items like desks, equipment, etc as allowable items. Or maybe they make a simple blanket credit for utilities and internet/phone (say $500 for everyone regardless of how much your utility costs are).

I think if you are WFH full time, you can claim a portion of internet/telephone and household utilities. now the exact percentage you can claim may require an accountant to verify, or just YOLO and do whatever you want.

The reasonable business expenses you can claim as an employee are not that different than if you are a sole prop, or a corporation. the key thing is that they need to be legit and reasonable and documented, don't be a scammer always looking to push the limits.

From what i understand for employees (and happy to be corrected on this), it's not just a matter of claiming what you want or having an accountant verify - it has to be done via a T2200 form that only employers can issue.

Sole prop or self employed is a completely different story and i don't think that's what people are discussing here.

All I want to reclaim is all the extra TP I used shitting at home instead of at the office.

Seriously, if the rule around it is similar to sole prop, I don't expect more than $600 refund for 2020 since my office is only around 7% of my home square footage wise. Now if there are some fixed claims we can do without everyone trying to game it, it would be nice.

My boss doesnt understand why I want to claim this benefit on my taxes. Hes like well "you can only claim utlities and internet so why even bother.." ....hate that attitude. He also seems to think its just me asking where I am saying it should be all Canadian employees at our company that should be claiming it.

Of course it would be nice, because it would make things easy.
But then everyone is going to claim it as soon as they are eligible for a T2200 form. People are going to try to game it when it is easy for them to do so.

Your boss is probably also a guy who believes it's all about the money you make, and not about the money you save too huh?
He also probably buys all his food at one place no matter how expensive regular price is. Schmuck.

Trudeau needs us working people to pay more taxes, not less.

My guess would be T2200 goes away if anything. Someone has to pay for the summer CERB holidays half the country took this year.

That's my guess too and probably reason employers are hesitant to give this out until closer to filing deadline.

All the pre-COVID WFH people are going to be pissed if T2200 is gone.
