This is what I hear. All the suburbanites love WFH in their McMansion with extra rooms to setup shop. Sucks your commute is so long but you chose it.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Update from San Francisco - mandatory shelter in place order stands until May 5, CEO has communicated that he wants reduced performance expectations for all staff to take into account personal well being, same pay and recently awarded bonuses stand, Zoom hella banned for security reasons.
@mr2mike your employer sucks

Zoom got banned at work here too
With the government releasing projections that we're going to peak around May which I interpret as we'll all be WFH for another couple of months at least, is it worth removing commuting coverage on the cars?

Oh, I completely agree. I took the job knowing the commute. That is why I don't complain about it. I was just stating how much I hate it. I avoid transit if at all possible, and if I have to go in to my office, I take my truck at pay the daily rate at James Short parkade and walk the block to my office. But, I also make every effort to work from home every day I can, and I hardly live in a McMansion in Coventry HillsThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

How much does the commute part factor into your insurance rates? I figured it would be pennies...This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

It’s not pennies at all. 4km each way commute for me plus my wife’s ~10km we had on hers was worth a few hundred dollars in premium between now and my renewal come august.
Saving at least 20 bucks a month on money you are otherwise literally throwing away is easily doable. Depends on your company and how they allocate premiums obviously. But commute has always been a pretty material amount of my premium historically.
Took me 15 minutes on the phone to switch it over; whenever you start commuting again just call back and update your coverage.

Zoom has become a new WebEx for conferencing and such. It has MASSIVE security issues but not like WebEx is any better. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Our company has basically implemented auto lock down of webex rooms after 5 minutes because we get "rogue" people joining. We had one guy join a meeting yesterday and start yelling in Arabic before he was kicked out.
I thought WebEx has encryption? I know WebEx can have private ID credentials. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
LOL maybe depends on how its setup, but right now we've been dealing with "rogue" joins. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Haha yeah you can have passcodes so it's a private meeting! This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Id say massive security issues is sensationalism. The problem are the defaults create ease of use, and that ease of use is being abused. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Enabling unique meeting ID for each meeting solves 90% of the problems except for zoom war dialers, and a password or require authenticated users solves the other 10%. Both without really affecting ease of use. Alternatively, a password lockdown can be done as well for those using zoom for free.
The only real problem is their weaker than advertised encryption, so yea unless I'm the NSA, NBD.

For the electrogeeks out there. Is there really a big benefit to a Sinewave UPS? They don't make them in a compact size.

Yes. The adapt better to when you have any sort of fluctuations in power. A quick shutdown of power isn't what usually fries or hurts electronics. Its the voltage fluctuations which will hurt your stuff more. And with our crappy power in Alberta its good to have. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Thanks. I already have that two Sinewave UPS (the one you linked me to and an APC), but I was wondering if they are just a waste of money in the home environment for my new system. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

For a PC tower honestly it's probably overkill because most quality PSUs (assuming you didn't use a crappy / offbrand one) have a high amount of filtering on them. A regular switched UPS likely will be fine. However other sensitive electronics may be more impacted. Monitors / printers / TVs / etc may be more sensitive to clean power than an actual desktop tower. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I have that same UPS, or one that looks identical anyway, and I can't run my Brother B&W laser printer through it. Every time it prints it would set off the UPS alarm. That printer must draw a fuckton of starting current, because my lights flicker throughout the house.

Should never plug laser printers into power bars or ups devices. Should be hooked directly to the outletThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
