Default Coronavirus- When to close schools

Theres lots of debate happening online with people pissed off Alberta isnt shutting down schools for kids yet. Lots of so called experts are jumping on the ucp and the drs for not making the decision to close them down now.

Has me wondering what people are thinking. If your wanting schools closed shouldnt we be closing down any non essential business as well? Restaraunts, movie theaters, casinos, bars, pubs or any retail environment?

IMO the main alberta dr is right. If your closing schools down your going to have to close them down long term not just for 2 weeks to make a few parents happy.

Shits definitely gotten out of hand. In edmonton they announced closure of libraries and rec centre's. I think schools would be a good idea as they are a cluster fuck of germs and disease. I am thinking of keeping my kids home next week to see how this plays out. I have elderly parents and last thing I want is my kids passing Kung flu onto them.

What about sports? ASAA cancelled basketball provincials but no word on any upcoming events.

If school is still open, having students compete in sports with other schools may not be a good idea. Parents, spectators, etc. I'm a coach and have not heard anything yet.

theres been no infection passed in the community yet. So far all known cases are from those who wanted to travel. So what does shutting a school down accomplish.

Until we get news of in-school transmission (and we will) I am ok with schools being open right now.

In an ideal world, we will already have closes them. But for many, where are they going to go during the day? Care centers are closed down now, so they may have to stay home. And if both parents work, that might not be possible either...

A lot of the country is on march break this coming week and all sports and activities have already been cancelled for the next month or so. It's fully expected school will be announced to be closed by the end of next week - presumed they just didn't announce it up front to try and keep people from taking longer/further vacations.... but that's giving the gov't more credit for foresight I doubt they have.

I posted the CDC decision tree in there seriars beerflu thread. Closing schools increases risk to grandparents etc. Also a lot of health care profs have kids of schooling age. This is a super tough decision.

Final selection tryouts for Team Alberta also cancelled. No announcements for club or tournaments yet. Between the two kids we have four out of town tournaments planned - not to mention league, exhibition games, and camps. I'm assuming our plans for the summer are changing...

Closing schools is a big decision but it can be effective. Dr Hinshaw is following the science and modeling around school closures though. Closing too early in a pandemic is not as effective. The duration also matters, as longer tends to be better up to 8 weeks.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4022492/

It’s a long read, but is a meta-analysis of the studies around school closures in the setting of influenza.

I've yet to see anyone, from any level of government in Canada, state what the vision and objective is. Is it to flat-out halt the spread of the virus? Is it to "flatten the curve" to have fewer peak cases but over a much longer window of time, and how long? Do they think we're all fucked and this is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic?

Once we know what we're actually trying to accomplish, we can figure out the best way to get there. I understand that there are economic ramifications of closing schools, but there are going to be economic ramifications if schools become a common transmission point. Also we need to break things down further and stop treating schools as an all-or-nothing thing -- there's a big difference in capability and behaviour of high school students versus div 1 elementary.

Two issues with leaving schools open (esp elementary schools):
    1. Teachers will get sick. What are schools going to do when 30% of teachers are out sick?
    2. Many kids get sent to school while sick, as parents have pressures to go to work and not be off sick for kids. In some areas, especially poorer parts of town, some parents won't come pick up their kids when they're sent home because of being sick. There's probably a solution to that but there will be outrage when two or three sick kids get put in the same room for the day outside their classrooms and probably without a teacher supervising, all because their parents either couldn't be contacted or outright wouldn't come pick them up.

Objective is pretty clear from Hinshaw's statements. Whether or not the school closure thing is widely agreed upon is a separate issue.

A lot of middle to low income, and hourly, workers do not have adequate childcare. There is the option to voluntarily remove your kids from school preemptively if that is a huge concern. Something that I will probably be doing.

I must have missed it. What do you think it is? What's the endgame?

I know someone planning to keep thier kids out of school. They have a grandparent with serious respiratory problems though, so I think they are trying to reduce chance of that person getting ill.

I'll send my kids as long as the schools are open, because we have no significant risk factors. Or that's the plan today. Sure seems like my feelings change pretty quickly, just like the situation.
