With the newest restrictions, now is a good time to make an order from from a local business. I'm as guilty as anyone of amazon-ing everything, but I will be dropping an order at https://bestofcalgaryfoods.com/ and https://riverbendpekinghouse.com/ asap.
Have been doing my best for a local machinist and my favourite vinyl shop www.betacuts.com as well.

Thanks for shout out bro. I’m holding steady but please support all the local shops as much as possible. They need it more than ever.

Shit, there's only 49 users here, I doubt we'll even break 100
How many small businesses do you guys support when buying xmas presents specifically, JK seemed to be really against big box stores in his lecture yesterday. I mostly don't shop at local (to me) small businesses because the aspen shops dont really cater to my gender/age group and the prices are generally higher. We do buy alot from etsy sellers (canada when possible and amazon.ca though, which in most part are individuals selling stuff on amazon (how is that not supporting small business).
Big thing for me typically is take-out food. I never use any of those Skip-the-dish, DoorDash, etc. apps.
Oh yeah and the local barber, I actually have no idea how barbers survive in regular times. My barber in springbank is two brothers, I figure based on how much the average cut is that they are making about $100 an hour between the two of them and then they have to pay rent and all the other expenses, doesn't seem like a great amount of money at all.
They need to cut and colour women's hair. Now there's a fucking gold mine if you don't suck.
We're keeping Christmas presents fairly low key this year, and hoping to find stuff in town to support the businesses. In-stock is always a tricky part of that.

Yeah, you often have to end up buying something different if you want to support local AND buy online. Back in pre-covid times, craft markets and farmers markets were excellent places to get gifts. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
You can always try googling "Local Calgary _____________" for ideas, and you may find something.

Well if I am looking for something, i usually google "Product name Calgary" but 90% of the time it wont be from a mom and pop shop.
Buying local is more work for sure from your keyboard. If you are out and about in the funky older neighborhoods like kensington, 17th ave, Ingelwood, international ave etc, you might find some awesome things. But most people, myself included, don't want to just wander around.
Local CD shop, BlackByrd Music (https://www.blackbyrd.ca/calgary/) I think they will mail to your house for a fee. Cool store, can get anything, and has a great selection of local artists, so you can do a double whemmy of support5ing the musician and the store with one purchase.

Awww, that's wonderful. She's a really great person too, she spent ages with my daughter and let her go through her sketch book at the Folk festival a few years ago. The shirts are great quality too, we have a bunch. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Mom & Pop stores can't afford to out SEO the big stores. Or they don't even know about SEO.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I convinced our company to purchase gift certificates from a small biz in our building instead of useless, Costco gift baskets with 33% shit that no one wants.
Seems like a Quad+ win.
1. Better gift.
2. Got discount on volume gift card purchase.
3. Cash in hand for biz person to keep going.
4. New customers for biz person.
5. Even if biz person folds, it's Company$ lost, not yours.
Yuck - I feel like I'm virtue signaling and I really hope I'm not!
Can someone lend me a cat to run over so I can reset the balance? No, wait - that would make the world a better place, too... I'm bad at this.
